At the risk of being the winner of the dumbest question award, can you change from comfort to sports mode while the car is moving? The hand book only says it must be in P,N or D. At the moment I change modes only when stationary just incase it damages the transmition. Am I being over cautious? Or just plain dumb?

Just read this in the manual but its more to do with driver safety than damage to the transmission I reckon

Never change the program mode when
the gear selector lever is out of
position P. This could result in a
change of driving characteristics for
which you may not be prepared.

Hi All

"This could result in a change of driving characteristics for which you may not be prepared" , Now this sound interesting :biglaugh: .

Also remember if you hit one of the two buttons on the back of the steering wheel this will put the gearbox into the manual mode & if you are in manual mode & keep the button pressed it put it back into auto mode .

Not quite. If you use the down paddle (or shift lever side to side) in auto mode then a gear number appears, but its not held in that gear as it is in manual mode, it simply "locks out" gears above the number. So if you shift to "4" in auto mode the car will use 1,2,3,4 but not 5,6,7 unless you overrev in which case it'll shift up.

In manual mode it will hold the gear selected unless you go so slow it has to change down, or so fast it has to change up (below tickover or above the red line in other words), or use kickdown.

Hi Charlie

All i was saying was if you unknowly press one of the two buttons/paddles on the back of the steering wheel the gearbox will go into manual mode ( normally happens in cars park etc) & yes you have to shift using the buttons/paddles or hold one button/paddle in & the box will go back into auto mode

In manual mode you only need to shift up from 1 -> 7 the box will still shift back down 7 -> 1 for you , you can shift down if you want to .

Andy, if you unknowly or knowly press one of the two paddles or even you moove the stick left or right the gearbox will NOT go into manual mode you will see a number between 1 and 6 because the letter D is the 7th.
For example when driving down from mountain roads it's better to limit your shift to "3" or 4 in auto mode and the car will only use 1,2,3 or 4 but not 5,6,7,unless you over rev in wich case it'll shift up.otherwise you will need to use your brakes all the way down and risk to over heat them.

Hi Gregotal

oh ok me bad , as i said it normal happens to me when moving the into & out of a tight parking space so it holds first or secord gear ,
I have not seen the gearbox when the shift limiter is on ie only shifts up to 3 or 4 , But in auto mode going down hills the gearbox will hold that gear & not shift up until you level out .

Cheers

Andy
