Hi all

I am new in the post, got my SLK 55 AMG 2013 (no P30 package) some months ago and I am enjoying it quite a lot and driving with my dog around (I'll post a picture :) later)

I want to buy a spare rim but I am unsure on specs as the manual states 8J x 18 H2 with a 43 mm offset and a 66.56 center bore. I have looked around and found some MB replicas with 8.5*18 or alternatively rims with different offset (42 or 45 mm). my questions are: (1) can I buy a 8.5 or would it be problematic, (2) can I get a different offset or (3) could anyone advice on specific rims that could work (i.e. I found that Audio has same measures exactly, would they work as it id just as a spare...).

Thanks in advance

I'm not good at wheel replacements but I know you can go a little wider or narrower but not by much when getting a new wheel. My recommendation would be to just buy comparable wheels for your car. Don't forget though, your front and rear wheels are different sizes so not sure if you are wanting to get 1 front and 1 rear. The stowaway generator tire inflator will work in a pinch with the donut but until you settle on what kind of rubber you want, just call MB roadside assistance if you run into trouble.

This segues into the tire thread, as what I tend to lean towards is Michelin tires (the have roadside assistance that comes with their tire warranty).

Thanks slickBenzGirl

Thanks for your answer. Very helpful :) I understand from my dealer that I can use one 18*8 for both front and rear (confirmed by manual for winter tires). My doubt comes from the fact that the MB replicas are posted as 8.5 and 9.5 instead of 8 and 9 so I wanted to be sure before ordering. Have a great day and thanks again :)

You ask about a spare tire. If the 172 is like the 171 the only thing is purchase the MB spare for SLK for it to fit in the space for a spare. These are flat and folded down to fit in the space and need the pump to pump it up. Spare is used to get you to a place to either repair or replace the damaged tire. The are limited to short distance and speed, but do what they are designed to do.

I agree with Gbarringer...

use the donut spare under the floor of the trunk if you need to get the car somewhere to get the tires repaired. My choice would be to use MB roadside assistance (or Michelin's roadside assistance once I get the SuperSports on my car). The donut looks kinda cheesy but it *will* get you anywhere that's within a 50 mile range safely.

Thanks guys. My plan is to buy the spare now with a snow tire and then get 3 more rims (8*18) plus snow tires for winter next year. I have found great deals on winter tires and want to take advantage now! i will ask at the dealer about the doughnut (my car came only with the tirefit thing an I do not feel comfortable to travel long distances without a real spare; maybe I am old fashion but come from a country that you are always on your own :).

Hi, I am looking for both the rims and the tires in order to have one spare on the car all year round and then switch the full set on winter (decreasing the rim size in the rear to 8 inch instead of 9). Cheers

If I read this correctly your looking to buy four wheels and tires to use in the winter but carry one of them as a spare ? If so is the trunk on a 172 that much bigger than a 171 in order to get a full size wheel in it ?

sorry for the confusion I created by starting with a spare wheel question :) The Spare does not fit in the spare tire space under the trunk but does fit in the trunk no problem without affecting the roof (checked at the dealership last saturday); I really don't mind losing the trunk space...

The 172 must have a bigger boot (trunk) than the 171 then as a standard road wheel and tyre is too big to fit in it
