Bought some real nice looking secondhand AMG 18" rims yesterday. Rims are 18x8.5J and ET35. Fitted with still good Dunlop 3D 235/40 wintertyres. When I fitted the front wheels I soon found out that won't fly. 235 is too wide. With the car on the jack it is already rubbing the suspension. So I guess I'll have to change the front tyres to 225. That would be no problem,225 is the minimum for 8.5J, but as I can see it also the rims are to wide with an offset of 35. Brabus and Carlsson have 8.5J front rims for the R171 but they have an offset of 28 or 30. So I figured a spacer of 5 mm would solve my problem. The hub that centres the wheel sticks out 25mm, so I think a spacer of 5 mm would be no problem, but I refuse to do any consessions regarding safety. So what do you guys think, do or don't? If not I would have to sell the rims again, which would really be a shame, they are very nice rims and I got them at a very fair price.

I have 18" on my slk 200 kompressor, front 225/40/18 and rear 255/35/18 and i don't have any spacers.

I order form that website the free clips I got also a confirmation...
I got the confirmation too, but no clips yet. I would really be surprised if they indeed do send them for free and without shipping costs. I would give a complete new meaning to the phrase "going Dutch".................
I'll keep you posted if and when I receive them.


But back to the original question, do you known the rim sizes of your front setup?
At the moment I also have 225/40/18 front but on 7.5J rims, offset 37. The ones I just bought are meant to be used for my winter setup, and they are 8.5 rearand front. Rear is not a problem but front is to wide with an offset of 35. 30 would be fine but 35 is just too much.

ET35 with 235x40x18 on the front and 265x35x18 on the rear worked fine on my 2005 350. No rubbing. Rims 8.0 and 9.5. Bigger problem was breaking the front caliper but if these are AMG rims that would be no problem.

I moved up to 235/35/19 (8.5) on the front and 265/30/19's (9.5) on the back. I had no issue with them suspension wise. But, the fronts cut into my Caliper slightly and since I just painted them, that was a problem. The company I purchased them through, sent me out 10mm spacers, which are probably overkill. I could probably do with 5 or maybe even 3mm. If the wheels didn't cut the calipers, I'd wouldn't be using spacers at all. I've been using the spacers for about 2 months, just on the front.

Regarding to safety, If you stick with quality products there won't be a problem with spacers.
We had a huge accident on my friends Audi TT couple of months ago.
He had massive spacers to change wheel base to 5x114 from 5x100.
Wheel has break off and crumbled like cookie but spacers and all the nuts were still intact.

I hate long spacers and long wheel locks but at last I have decided to use on my car.

Okay, thanks for the info. I guess using spacers of 5 mm front wouldn't be a problem. Got that issue solved.
But another thing I ran into (yes, I kow, I should have done my home work before I bought them) is that these rims come from a W211 and that has M14 lug bolts. The R171 uses M12.
In the buy I also got the lugs that go with the rims and if I compare them with the lugs I have now on my SLK the head looks exactly the same. Both 17 mm wrench and both same ball-radius head. Only difference is the M12 is obvious a bit thinner than the M14. Now, I know that the lugs are not supporting the vehicle and there is always some play between the lugs and the lug holes, obviously with the M12 lugs more than with the M14, but still. Would it be safe to use the M12 lugs in this case? Does anyone has some experience with this or even better actually has this kind of setup?

I wouldn't dare to go there trying to shoehorn M14 into a M12 hole. Lugs are pretty cheap. Buy a new set.

No, it is the other way around. The holes in the rims are for M14 bolts and the holes in the hub of the SLK are M12. So I have to use the M12 bolts. But the hole in the rim is much to wide for the M12 as these are meant for M14´s. So I am not trying to make an M14 fit in a M12 hole. Wouldn´t even think of it. Just wondering if I can use M12´s with a rim that has holes in it for M14´s. Don´t know if that could be an issue. Like I said, the head of the bolts is exactly the same for the M14 and M12, only the thread differs. Both seat perfectly in the rim. Only the M12 has ofcourse more play in the hole through the rim than the M14.

That shouldn't be a problem.
Have your wheels mounted in a allightment shop.
Let them check and allign the wheels.
If there is any problem you will spot before you drive your car.

Well, yes and no. I asked some Indies and they all strongly dvised me not to do that. The wheel could come off they said. So I did some more searching around and found out that the head of the bolts look the same but actually isn't. They are all ball/radius bolts, but the M14 bolt has a radius of 14mm ( of course the hole in the rim also) and the M12 bolt has a radius of 12 mm. So that isn't a perfect fit and a recipe for disaster if you mount it that way. But luckily there is German supplier SCC https://www.spurverbreiterung.de/ that delivers M12 bolts with a M14 head! So that should work perfectly.

Hallo Paul,

uiteindelijk heb ik ze nooit besteld, de AMG's bleken geen echte AMG's te zijn maar Chinese nep, (dom,dom,dom, had het van te voren moeten controleren natuurlijk), dus heb ik de hele handel weer verkocht.
Maar als je die bouten zoekt, het zijn deze:
spurverbreiterung - nach Gewinde

De F1V zijn V(erzinkt) en de F1G hebben een G(eomet) coating. Geomet schijnt de milieuvriendelijke variant van verzinken te zijn, mocht je dat belangrijk vinden........

The AMG Turbine rims on my '10 SLK 350 Sports Pkg are:

Front: 7.5 J X 18 H2 37 MM ET (offset) with 225/40/18 Tires

Back: 8.5 J X 18 H2 30 MM ET (offset) with 245/35/18 Tires

I would avoid wheels that need spacer, and I'd stay away from fitting bigger tires (section width). Doing so involves unnecessary expense and usually rubbing issues.
