Kids, i am so sorry to talk about the new Amg running most of the time on 4 cylinders to be Eco friendly. Here is the thing that kills me does Mb really thinks that people buy an Amg to be Eco friendly? No they buy it for what ever Reason. Power Prestige etc etc . The Badge on the trunk.
or to impress $$$ wise. Here in America we do not buy Eco friendly like in Europa we just hope that the Gas price will stay under 4 bucks to fill our thrills. Yeah i know it was 2 Bucks 10 years ago. Long gone. But really an Amg Batch for close to 80k running on 4 cylinders most of the time. HHHm that makes my old R170 look like a Bargain. Or even better why would Mb hold out on the Slk 250 Cgi for the American Market. Because we can,t think for ourselfs so they tell us . Well let me tell you i would buy the R 172 Slk 250 with a 4 Banger because the Guy next to me in the 70k plus Amg still only got 4 cylinders because he is Eco friendly. :biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh:

Will i loose the race at the Stop Light hell yes but i still have the same thrill at 40k less who is the sucker now.

IMO, anyone who buys an slk 250 over an slk 200, IS a sucker!

Do you really think that the extra 20 bhp is worth the few grand hike in price tag?

Within no time, I'm sure it'll be possible to raise the power of the slk200 to match that of the 250, and probably for just a few hundred bucks!:biglaugh:

I do not see the extra cost in the 250. It's plain pointless.

The V8 running on 4 Cyl on pootling makes great sense to me. I do a city commute daily and use the car for fun on weekends and at other times. I need only the 4 Cyl for city commute.

It is not a question of whether i can afford to pay for the "wasted" power or not, but it is more a matter of using resources responsibly and reducing emissions IMO.

As long as that V8 does the job when it is being kicked in the belly, i dont care what other tricks are used to reduce emissions and increase mileage on day to day driving.

Also, the American attitude towards emissions and petrol consumption needs to change. Petrol is not going to be around forever and climate change is a reality.

Just my 2p.

Turbo V6 would probably be a better choice, but that takes some of the kudos out of having an AMG 55 with a V8.

The trend is towards smaller engines working harder, otherwise termed 'increased power density'. This leads to improved efficiency and reduced emissions for a given engine size. However, in a country like the USA where a big lazy V8 is seen as top banana for that trip across the state, small buzzy V6 and S4 engines are considered rather less than de rigueuer.

I also agree BTW with Lockheed1971, the 250 makes no sense over a 200. In the R171, the 280 being a V-6 was IMO a useful upgrade over the 200.

First of all, that engine will run full song/all 8 as soon as the driver demands it. And it will NOT be outperformed by any previous model SLK.

Second of all, Mercedes will cease to exist as a viable auto producer if they don't do things like this. They're already way behind BMW in this "image" competition.

Remember Merc is from Germany--where they'll cut off their nose to spite their face when it comes to nuclear power. It for sure won't be their cars polluting their air.
