Hi all just finished rebuilding the hydraulics for the roof. I noticed a few weeks ago that the raising and lowering was slowing down then on Sunday after taking a trip out I couldn’t get it to move at all when I got back home. After checking the pump, I found it empty of any oil. A further search reveled that both roof actuators had been leaking. I’m including some pictures that might help anyone that has to do this job or is planning doing it.

First with the roof in the up position remove the lock washer on the rod end of the two actuators and push out the pins. (If you lower the roof before doing this you cannot get the pins out.)

Next whilst you in the trunk remove the CD player and all the plastic pieces on the pump side along with the roof support. Using the Allen key back out the brass screw (counterclockwise)

After that go to page 226 in the Owner Manual and read how to raise the roof manually then do the job backwards allow you to get the roof onto the trunk (boot).

Then open the doors and remove the piece shown in the picture revealing the other end of the actuator. Remove the lock washer and push the front pins out (they do not come all the way out but far enough to allow removal of the actuator after removing the cable ties). This allows about 8”off play enough to repair them.

Go to http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r170-slk-class/1638473-slk-top-cylinder-rebuild-guide-cut.html and follow the instructions for the rebuilds.

Once done re-assemble in the reverse order.

I know there's lots about this subject but thought this might help, hope so anyway.

Good look give yourself a few hours.
