SoCal meet with DaytonaJae this weekend (Sunday 12/26)

(updated @ 12/21, 5:00pm with details)

So DaytonaJae just landed in SoCal last night, to enjoy some of our fabled good weather. We've been PM-ing back and forth a bit and thought it would be fun for some of the SoCal SLK crowd to meet up with everyone's favorite SLK32 modder/restorer.

The Weather Channel tells me that Sunday is supposed to be a nice day, although right now that is very hard to believe. The plan is to get together Sunday 12/26 at 10:00am in the school pick-up/drop-off parking lot that we used for the earlier meet back in April (CLICKY CLICKY!!) of this year. It is just north of New Roads School, 3504 Las Flores Canyon Road, Malibu, CA, in case you want to do your own googling.

We'll go for a scenic drive through some of Malibu's canyons at what will be a moderate pace probably, due to residual effects of this winter storm. Afterwards lunch at Tra Di Noi in Malibu. Here's a map link for that place (CLICKY CLICKY!!). Again, for the self-googlers, the address of the restaurant is 3835 Cross Creek Road, Malibu, CA.

Roll-call attached to the end of the thread. Please copy and add your own name to sign up. If the roll-call is not at the end of the thread, look for it in earlier posts as someone probably posted some tangentially related drivel :D.

ORIGINAL POST INCLUDED FOR POSTERITY: The best days are probably Friday (12/24), assuming people have the day off, or Sunday (12/26). As hard as it seems to believe right now, the weather is supposed to be dry and partly cloudy by then.

As far as the meeting place. Jae is staying in Rancho Palos Verdes and is familiar with the immediate surroundings. It would be fun if we could put a little bit of driving into the meet (Jae to ride shotgun with someone), but I am not sure how long it will realistically take for Malibu to dry out to where the roads are not criss-crossed by streams. Perhaps Bill has an opinion on this.

So, my initial preference is for Friday morning, but I'm up for Sunday if that has a better chance of allowing for some canyon carving.
:burnout:

Jae is leaving the 27th so it would have to be either of those 2 days.

Please chime in!

I am OK with both days, with or without canyon driving is fine.

Meet time? (maybe 10-10:30 am for coffee and brunch/early lunch?, although I'm open also for breakfast) Where? We can all leave for home in early afternoon. Rancho Palos Verdes is where the billionaires of Long Beach live :)

I have a Christmas eve dinner (6 pm) to attend or face the wrath of the CEO, CFO and COO :biglaugh:

I'm in! :) Haha it would be awesome to meet you guys, coffee, breakfast, lunch, whatever. I'll be slummin' it in a Lexus LS460 (the friggin Queen Mary compared to my SLK), but I can meet you guys somewhere then ride shotugun!

I grew up here in PV but don't really know the area that well since I left to go to college out of state right after graduating high school, so in effect, I only had 1 year of geographical driving knowledge of Socal. If you guys are into scenic coastlines PV is the place tho, I know the coastline drives pretty well, unless they changed it lol...

Durk, it will be your call on date/day, time and where to meet and see who chimes in. It'll be cool even for 2-4 hours of meeting time.

I'm going to wait just a bit to see if others chime in with a clear preference for one day or the other. Probably call it tomorrow? Depending on who joins in and whether we want to do some driving, we can move the meet-up location around so it's convenient for everyone (except for me :D).

Im up for either day, but vastly prefer Sunday. Looking forward to meeting DaytonaJae in person!

Malibu roads will be wet and may have some parts of the pavement missing or buried in mud and rubble, but we can probably still plan a scenic route. I'll keep an eye on the local news. last I checked the only Malibu road closure was out by neptune's net where we had lunch on one drive. However I am almost 8 hours behind on local road news.

The proper statement would be, "you cali guys only have one coastline whereas we have three"

And the Cali folks could say back, "yeah? well at least our state isnt the penis of america"

So on and so forth...

Hey and while were poking fun at this, why does California have it's own section? Every other state is bundled into a region such as "SouthEast"!

I want a Daytona section!
(it would be rather lonely)

Here is a meet point we used for our Malibu Drive on April 10, 2010. It is a school parking lot so it should be empty on Sunday for sure, and probably empty on Friday too (X-mas eve):

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=&daddr=34.047051,-118.639228&hl=en&geocode=&mra=mi&mrsp=0&sz=19&sll=34.047061,-118.638812&sspn=0.001936,0.002409&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=19
Awright, let's just set it for Sunday and see who else wants to join in. So here's the deal. Get together in the school parking lot as indicated in the link above at 10:00am Sunday 12/26. From there we'll do some scenic driving, I'd imagine at moderate speeds because of residual dampness in the area. Then it's off to lunch at a spot as yet to be determined (Neptune's Net? Apparently there have been some road closures in that area; Bill to parse local news for more information).

Initial roll-call:

1) DaytonaJae
2) Durkatlon
3) etyu
4) SantamonicaSLK32

Feel free to copy the roll-call and tack yourself on. I'll update the initial post as well.

Neptune's Net is currently blocked off by road closure on PCH. A very nice Malibu lunch choice is:

http://www.tradinoimalibu.com/index.html

It doesn't show in the website, but they have a great lunch menu "to go" with awesome sandwiches and salads, and open outdoor seating next to a small park and upscale shopping in mid-Malibu. Tasty and fairly fast for a group. If it is raining sunday we could sit down inside Tra Di Noi for lunch. The are also always coastal options like Moonshadows or Dukes where we can see the ocean as we grab some lunch.

As is often the case with our SoCal meetings, within a day of agreeing on a date, rain is forecast for that date :D:D. Looks like 40% chance for showers now predicted for Sunday. If this were a regular meet I'd be getting ready to propose a postponement, but since Jae will return to Florida on the 27th, we're kind of stuck.

I'll just resist the urge to do too much car-cleaning beforehand and bite the bullet. Hopefully the weather forecast becomes more favorable within the next few days.

If it is raining on Sunday, I am happy to lead a low speed drive to a few pretty cool waterfalls that run during wet weather (and can be seen from the car or roadside) in the Malibu Hills.

Or we can just meet for brunch and coffee and go from there. Whatever the case it won't be a loss! Talk cars with SLKHeads, take pics, eat, can't beat that.
