I'm starting a thread for an evening desert drive out to Idyllwild for an dinner followed by a night descent with great views.

The schedule is as follows:

4:00 pm
Meet up at
Chevron
31669 Temecula Parkway
Temecula, CA 92592-5868
This station is backed by a large Stator Brothers parking lot. Cars can get gas and SLKs can park in the Stator Brothers lot directly south of the station.

4:30 pm
Depart for Idyllwild. The route will take us east on CA 79 and north on County Road 3 to Hemet. Then we will take CA 74 and 243 to Idyllwild.

6:00 - 6:30 pm
Arrive in Idyllwild for dinner. Dinner location is up for discussion, but there is a list of available places here:
http://www.idyllwild.com/dining.html
I have not been to any of these places, so I am open to recommendations. Sunset is at 6:30.

8:00 pm or later
Depart Idyllwild and head north on 243 to I-10. Doing this descent at night provides some great views of the city lights as described by Durk in an earlier thread. Once we get to I-10 everyone goes home their seperate ways.

This is only 36 hours notice for the drive, but all SoCal SLKs are welcome.

Looking forward to putting the ol' SLK back in action after not being allowed to drive it for several weeks because of alignment problems!! This is a gorgeous drive.

Unfortunately I already have other plans but would love to attend future events, even on short notice. So please keep me on the list! Have fun, everybody.

We might want to consider De Portola Rd instead of taking 79 too far east. The "Chihuahua Fire" is burning near Sunset Summit which is just east of Aguanga. I've plotted an alternative way to get to 74 which keeps us further away from the fire. We can play it by ear tomorrow depending on what this fire ends up doing.

Sounds like fun, and thanks for the invite, but we've got family coming over. As much as I'd like to ditch them, I doubt that would go over too well.

The wheels look good Dan!

It will be great to see you again, Paul! We're definitely not cancelling. I'm looking forward to a bit of driving. The wild fire we should be able to avoid without too many problems.

By the way, I'm not sure how you plan to come up to Temecula, but if you need to be on I-15 near Miramar, be aware of two things that will slow you way down. 1) Miramar Airshow, 2) 5-car pile-up with double fatality @ Miramar.

The car accident was probably from people distracted by airplanes coming across the freeway at very low altitude.

If you can I would advise you to take 56 or 78 across to 15 from 5/805 so you can avoid that mess. I plan to take 67 to Poway and rejoin the 15 there at Ted Williams Pkwy. You have my number so let me know if you get hopelessly stuck.

There's the NorCal/SoCal meet the weekend of October 14-16.

Prior commitments have prevented me from joining today's meet.

Alright I got back just after 10pm. It was a great run. Just an all-around lovely day weather-wise. Very nice route plotted by Dan to get from Temecula to Hemet; the Wilson Valley Rd was really fun and a nice new discovery and addition to the arsenal of twisties.

So we had myself, Dan (ponia003) and Paul (mbpaul). Paul and I were coming from San Diego and had to negotiate a freeway closure on I-15 because of a bad accident, so Paul actually came to my house and then we took some backroads that I am familiar with to bypass the I-15 all the way to Escondido. This was a nice start to the run.

We met Dan in the parking lot in Temecula and then headed off, with Dan path finding. Because it was later in the afternoon most people on the road were leaving for the day instead of coming and consequently were going the other way which was perfect for us!

We did part of 79, part of 371, then Wilson Valley Rd and Sage Rd. Bypassing most of Hemet we started on the twisty run up to Idyllwild. This is always a great road and it was good fun using the Passing Lanes to have a bit of a race.

We had dinner in Idyllwild at a Mexican place. The weather was super mild up there, which was nice to cool off from the desert heat down below. After dinner we took a leisurely drive down 243 in the dark so we could admire the city lights without fear of running ourselves off the road. Made a few stops at to take in the view, very loud crickets and the starry band of the Milky Way.

Then we descended onto I-10 and everyone went their separate ways. Paul, I lied to you about the best way to get back being I-10 to I-15. I put it in the Nav and then it came back to me. You actually take I-10 to 60 to 215 to 15. Hope I didn't send you on too bad a detour...

Now for some pictures:

At the Temecula meet-up spot.

Photo stop along Wilson Valley Rd.

Parked in Idyllwild.

Sun was about to go down when we got to the town.

The food! Normally Eddy takes this picture, but he could not make it today! :D

Dan & Paul at the dinner table.

The restaurant.

Getting ready for the downhill leg of the trip. You can just make out Paul's car lowering the roof.

View from above. This was from about 3000ft which is still almost half the maximum altitude of the trip today. The last 3000ft of the descent are really rapid and within a few minutes of taking this picture we were back on the desert floor.

Great run yesterday. Desert run was good and twisty and the slower cars (usually) were polite enough to pull over for us.

We had some interesting events on our journey. On the desert turns, we came around a corner to find an SUV straddling the centerline and mostly in our lane. It moved right when it saw us, but it was a bit of a surprise coming out of the corner. On 74 we were followed by a large pickup that kept up with us for the most part climbing up the mountain. The climb must have been fun for him as well.

The night descent had great views and fun cruising. It was fun to watch the air temperature rise on the descent.

Some of my photos are below, showing the desert views and the stats for the day.

Thanks to Durk and Dan for leading the way and snapping pics, the trip up to Temecula and the main event to Idyllwild were both twisty and scenic, ascending into the trees of the mountain forest!

Durk, don't worry, I saw the split for Highway 60 to Riverside and figured that was the way to go! I checked today and it cuts ~50 miles off the return trip.

Truly a great outing, amazing weather, roads, and compatriots. Hope to see you join us for the NorCal / Socal Meetup!
