------------------ OLD POST --------------

Talking about this during our run in January made me want to do it... or a variant of it.

San Fernando Mission Blvd to I-5 S - Google Maps

The idea would be to wait until JULY for this (because of the Tioga pass closure), so at this point I'm just opening this thread to see if there's people interested.

Day 1: Leave from LA early, drive north through the 14-395. Stop at Red Rock Canyon for photos.

Then continue north to Fossil falls for a short hike:

Then continue north to Lone Pine for lunch. Depending on time, take Mt. Whitney portal road to get to the base of the tallest mountain in the continental US.

Keep going north, optional stop Onion Valley:

Reach Mammoth Lakes as the sun is setting, have dinner, sleep. :)

Day 2:
Half day in Mammoth Lakes:

Then leave north. Depending on time, optional drive through June Lake Loop:

Finally, veer west into Tioga Pass:

And go into Yosemite:

Depending on lodging and time, there might be part of the day left.

After this, there could be a 3rd day at yosemite or there's a lot of more parks driving south (Sierra National Forest, Kings Canyon, Sequoia National Forest).

The drive the first day is actually kinda straight, but the area is very interesting. The drive would get better the second day. I was thinking about this from a mini-vacation point of view. :)

Thoughts?

Hey Steve, perhaps some NorCallers would like to tack on an extra half-day to the front to drive to Palmdale/Lancaster and meet up with the SoCal group to do the entire tour? I will probably do something similar coming from San Diego otherwise I'll have to leave way too early on the first day.

Pablo, this route looks great. Marcelle and I are definitely up for this. I'm guessing there won't be time to add this, but it seems like a shame to take 99 from Fresno on the way back instead of going back through Kings Canyon and Sequoia NPs back to Three Rivers and hit 99 at Visalia. Something to consider.

EDIT: Oh, I should have carefully read the entire posting by Pablo before offering the Kings Canyon/Sequioa suggestion. :D

Is this like a three-day 2-night event(Fri-Sat-Sun)?

Got room for a sorely confused SLVette in there? Count me in! It won't be a bobcat I hit this time.. but instead probably a bear! :tazz:

I was initially thinking about 3 days, 2 nights, but it might be a bit of a shame, being around Yosemite, to return so fast. I can certainly fit an extra day to either hike around Yosemite and/or explore more parks down south.

One thing to note is that lodging around Yosemite in that time of the year might be difficult to find, specially closer to the date...

And yes, meeting up with the NorCal folks would be amazing!

Not sure about current conditions or when you/we are are thinking about, but the Wawona toward the south entrance is always a favorite...

I stayed at Tenaya Lodge a bit south of the south entrance a few years back and loved it. Only downside was the drive to the valley and back...

There's the Curry Camp down in the valley itself if we want to semi-"rough it". I've stayed there in the winter and it was brutally cold at night, but I'm guessing when we go it will probably be OK. Another alternative is Lee Vining at the East entrance.

Alright! Time to revive this thread to start locking in dates, lodging and attendance.
Available weekends in July:

1- Saturday June 30th to Monday July 2nd (+1 day optional)
2- Saturday July 7th to Monday July 9th (+1 day optional)
3- Saturday July 14th to Monday July 16th (+1 day optional)
4- Saturday July 21st to Monday July 23rd (+1 day optional)
5- Saturday July 28th to Monday July 30th (+1 day optional)

Alternatively we could do June but right now Tioga pass is closed and there's no guarantee it'll be open in June...

I'm fine anytime, just have to put in my vacation request. I'm thinking about doing 4 days instead of 3... but the idea is that if somebody doesn't wanna stay extra time they can always return a day earlier.

On the way back I would love to do Mineral King road, which appears to be one of the twistiest in California: The world's ten twistiest roads

"The road that leads eastward out of Three Rivers doesn't go to any specific place, just to a mountain overlook area called Mineral King. It rises 6400 feet during its 25 mile wend through the California countryside. The best part is that when you're done, you get to turn around and do it all over again — the road is a dead end."

Please reply with your choice of dates and any blackout dates you wouldn't be able to make it...

Really looking forward to this. I can do any of those weekends. As soon as we have the weekend nailed down we'll need to get some hotel reservations. July will be prime tourist season for international visitors no doubt.

I can do any of the July weekend. Is there a reason for doing Saturday through Monday instead of Friday through Sunday?

Monday is a busy day at work and it's difficult to find someone to cover my shift. I will make the effort if this conforms to the plans.

End of June is when school ends and the kids and parents go on vacation. Perhaps mid-July onward is better? i.e., July 14, 21 or 28? Just asking.

Good points. Alternatively we could do middle of June (hopefully Tioga will be open) to minimize interference with school being off? Honestly, I have no idea about the school year/vacations here, I'd prefer avoiding peak weekends if possible.

I was thinking saturday-monday/tuesday simply because of personal preference (I'd rather have a long weekend then a short week, rather a short week then a long weekend, then a regular week), I'm flexible though :)

Thoughts?

Mid-June will be hard for me because of trips to Cleveland, Ohio.

I can't do first week in June. I think mbpaul had a conflict then as well. Other than that I'm open.
