Started with a 08 plate r171 which I've seen a few times lately. Then passed an 06 plate on the road. Parked in a Car Park near a r172 250. Driving out I saw a red r172 250 Cdi and a silver r170. Stopped for petrol and another r170 in the carwash.. SLK's everywhere.. like Zulu's..

Did you leave them with SLKWorld business cards?...

I realise you may never have even seen the above thread before... if you'd like me to send you some cards, just send me a PM with your name and address, and I'll post some out to you. :tu:

... and don't worry about only having 5 posts, because you can send PMs to moderators even before you get to 15 posts on the forum. :)

Can someone explain to me British "year plates"? Can you tell the year of a car by the license plate, or the year of first sale, something like that?

Did approximately 100 mile trip today, home - Merthyr - Abergavenny - Crickhowell - Llangynidr - Brecon - Sennybridge - Hirwaun - home and didn't see a single SLK. I did however get a comment from a young lady in a car park in Crickhowell who said my AMG looked and sounded beautiful  Unfortunately my wife was present (and I am way to old) so I could not take it further and she drove off in her Fiat 500 Abarth. Had a bit of fun on some of the roads though, this car is addictive!

I don't see many really, one or two a week, a bit like when we had a Smart back in 2002. The only difference is that at that time Smart owners would flash and wave. SLK owners don't seem to.

Current style:
Comes out twice per year and is year of registration

01-09 2001-2009
51-59 2001-2009 also.

Previous versions existed.

A link to explain:

In truth, it tells you nothing for certain.

I have a 2007 car with an appropriate plate.
But I can buy a personalised plate from earlier years but NOT later years.
So AB07CDE might be on the car, but I could have AB01CDE (2001) but NOT AB09CDE.
I could have very old plates from before you could date by plate number
eg 123ABC
So it might tell you
or it might not.

That's the beauty of being British.
Nothing is easy.

I'll put a link in just a moment.

Generally speaking (since 2001) the're numbered for the year, 01,02,03 etc, for the first half of the year, for the second half of the year a 5 is added to the first number, 51,52,53 etc

From 2010 the're numbered the same, 11,12,13 etc and for the second half of the year 61,62,63, and so on

Therefore my SLK, first registered in april 2013 is XX13XXX - simple

Where the problem comes is with personalised plates (as already stated) you cannot make the vehicle appear YOUNGER than it actually is, you can make it appear OLDER

Pre 2001 number plates gave the age of the vehicle using the prefix, ie A123XXX, etc, there aren't many of the vehicles aged on their suffix letters (XXX123A,etc) about any more

Just read your post - the date given by the plate is that of 'First registration'

Further research - prefix letters (A123XXX etc) ran from 1983 to 2001
suffix letters (XXX123A etc) ran from 1963 to 1983
Both series ommitted certain letters, I & O etc, also Q, to prevent confusion
