Hi Guys,

I'm new around here! - have a quick question on servicing.

My 55 is due a service B (4 years old this Feb, 22K miles driven).

Spoke to Mercedes Milton Keynes - they have quoted me £1147.76 for my service:

This includes service B
- spark plug replacement
- air filter replacement
- oil change and oil filter
- dust filter
- brake fluid replaced

This is my first service with this car - seems a lot, but I guess it all adds up pretty quickly??

Any advice would be good - just want to make sure I'm not getting completely ripped off!

Cheers

Steve

Thanks for the link Woolly, very useful. If someone has any idea on price and if my quote is in the right ball park that would be reassuring.

Cheers

You think they're just agressive with the timing? On the 280 it's 78,000 miles or 5 years. Not sure what it is for the AMG.

Ok. Try this.

http://www.mbusa.com/mercedes/service_and_parts/maintenance_manuals

The link above will give you the 2005 SLK55 AMG Maintenance Manual. On Page 60 it says that you should replace the plugs at 100,000 miles or after 5 years. I personally think that it is ridiculous to do it at 22,000 miles. I replaced the six plugs in my 280 at 45,000 miles and 6 years and the ones I pulled out looked fine and were running fine. My swap was easy, but yours has 16 plugs and I read on here that the access is more difficult.

The other question is if not changing them at the recommended interval would create any warranty issues. My car isn't under warranty any more so it wasn't important to me. It may be to you.

thanks everyone for further comments. I presume they wouldn't say if they didn't need swapping and would just do it anyway and charge!

I think I will mention that someone I know didn't need their spark plugs changing until 50K+ miles.

I do hate having to put all my faith in an industry which is renowned to overcharge - I don't know enough about the mechanics of the car to say whether or not something needs to be done!

Thanks REB_TN_06 for the maintenance manual link ;)

I have an extended warranty on the car up until May this year.

Preserving your extended warranty is pretty key here - or at least it would be in my mind. I had my plugs changed last year in my 05 55, based on time not mileage..

Check and see what price they are charging you for the plugs, and offer to supply your own if the can't match Amazon prices. I'm surprised they hit you for plugs and not on the transmission fluid change - both should trigger at the 5 year mark..

I'll have to go dig up my bill, but I paid about that for plugs and transmission service on top of a "normal" "B" service, skipped the cabin air filter, and supplied my own plugs.

I think she said around £450 for the plugs (i'm not sure if this is with labour or not?)
Thanks John.

Looks like I'm due for all of the above as well. 2007, 30,000 miles. It's almost a good thing the used car dealership I got my 55 from forgot to pay my trade in off for 2 months, and they offered to pay my next service. I wonder if they'll pay for the full service B, spark plugs, fuel filter, and transmission fluid change...

Cheers Pete, much appreciated. I know its always the MB labour which is most costly! Car is due 2 new rear tyres - an expensive month I think.

I understand there is something of an "AMG tax" here, but £1200 for what seems like fairly straightforward servicing jobs seems a little....excessive?

Is the sparkplug change not a DIY job?

And would you not consider a specialist rather than a main dealer? Can't say I've ever dealt with a dealer and had anywhere near the personal service and quality of work that a speicialist has provided...and thats before you take into account the price!!

@mattyB, did you get a 55 in the end? I remember you enquired alot about one on the pistonheads forum.
I didn't, no - a rare "must own" car of mine came up for sale, so I bought that to tick it off the list. But now someone wants to buy it from me, so I'm back looking at the 55's again...they seem to have taken something of a price hit in the last 12 months too, which is handy :)

Interested in tracking down Legin's old car, see if the current owner is thinking of selling, as it had some choice mods like the LSD which I'd look at doing myself.

It was a very specific Audi RS2. They're fairly rare anyway, but the exact one I was after cropped up. Needed to tick it off the list!

(Sorry, thread tangent!)

Car is back safely, all serviced and paid for. 2 new rear tyres paid for too, so the car is all ready for Spring/Summer!

Now is it worth renewing the extended Merc warranty for £750/year? the guy I bought it from last year purchased it and it runs out mid-March, would be my luck that something would go wrong in a month if I didn't get it!

I've never owned a extended warranty before so I don't know if there are 3rd party companies too? any advice would be good.

cheers
