Well I'm fuming!

Just been under the hood and found that my engine front cover is missing the Mercedes star. This appears to have been broken off by the dealer about 4 weeks when it was in for a service and I've only just noticed!

Anyone know if these are known for breaking off possibly when removing the engine covers?

Going to have to go in and kick some butt next week by the looks of it! I suspect that as the badge is part of the front cover I or should I say they are going to have to replace the entire front cover!

Sorry but yes, they will have to replace the whole cover
and I recall just 1 other member having it go broken or missing
I believe they bought a wheel cap cover and replaced it that way after 'surgery'

Thanks for confirming that Jeff. I would normally check the car all round but on this occasion didn't pop the bonnet to look just checked for exterior damage. I'm guessing the tech broke it and decided not to report it, will be interesting when I go back to the dealer next week!

Understand how you feel Col. The Inverness dealership stained a brand new set of Alloygators on Mabel. When I pulled them about it, they totally denied it was them. Luckily the service manager had spotted the stain thinking it was soap residue as I had left, so he admitted they had done and replaced them. Now, when Mabel's been into the dealership for anything, I check everything before leaving.

Good luck next week, though I'm sure you'll get it sorted.

My star went missing, so I took a star off a wheelcap and glued it on.:crying:

The original emblem must be easily broken off. The '06 SLK 55 I bought last month looked exactly like Col's pic in post #1 . I used the patch Jeff mentioned in the quote. A star removed from an old wheel cap.

The diameter of the star is too small to cover area exposed by the missing emblem. I found a PVC conduit coupling at Lowes with the right diameter, cut a thin slice from it to serve as a filler ring, and sprayed it silver. The star fits perfectly over the ring.... sort of a floating star. I backed the ring with some stainless steel mesh. Plus epoxy to hold everything together.

I will eventually cave in and replace the cover, but the wallet is squirming too much right now.

Went to the dealer after work expecting a fight, but I was nice and polite. To my surprise very understanding, apologetic and they have ordered my replacement engine cover. Bad cop can stand down, mission accomplished, phew! :surprise::smile:
Result :)
And you can sell your old one on ebay Minus the star . >:D

Great news Col... one has to wonder, if it was that easy, did they already know and were they expecting your call/visit?... and, if so, why didn't they just fess up in the first place?...

Apparently the tech had noted it as loose and told the service manager that he'd tried to secure it with some glue!!

So an admission of guilt really but I see no evidence of glue being used!

It is clear that the plastic becomes brittle with heat cycling over time so guess I've been lucky that they broke it instead of me but it would have been nice have been told 4 weeks ago.
