Remove the air intake pipes first. Next pry up and remove the front top cover. Next pry up and remove the air box/main cover piece. With the air box removed from the car you will see the air filter housings on the back. Remove the screws to gain access to the filters. Replace filters, cleaning the air box first. Reassemble in reverse order. Simples!
Thanks Col,
So the main housing assembly just pulls up? no screws no fixtures? I did try pulling this housing up but it felt extremely tight as if it was screwed down and didn't want to break anything!
Will take another look when the sun comes up!

Just take your time and ease it up a corner at a time. From memory there are ball headed pegs moulded into the front cover and air box cover these locate in sockets on engine. They are a snug fit!
I just did this last weekend! Just be careful when you lift the front cover piece off. I broke a peg because I didn’t lift straight up on it. The big cover needs to be lifted straight up too. I made a super crude diagram for you.

Hi everyone,
A few months ago I met a guy in the car park at the southbound Watford Gap service station on the M1. He had just come back from a SLK meet in Scotland ? or somewhere up north. I think his name was Trevor but not sure. He had a R172 and I was in a black R170. We chatted for a while...
