Hi all, my first post on here with a strange problem with our 2014 SLK 350 that I'd really appreciate some help with.

November 2014 SLK350, 7000 miles.

Mainly used on shortish, local runs, 15 - 50 miles. Has been on a few long trips, no problems.

Back in August took it on run along the A14; in cruise at 70, gone about 40 miles when the engine seemed to 'load up' oddly. The fuel consumption rose massively as the trip range fell accordingly. Felt as if handbrake was soon, brakes were binding or it was a diesel going through a filter region, none of which was the case.

Stopped, turned off and restarted, Ok for a few minutes then started doing the same thing. Tried aircon on and off, no change. Fuel consumption over 20 miles or so was very low 20s.

Reached destination, car parked up for 4 or 5 hours. On home journey same thing occurred after a few miles then it cleared and ran normally after maybe 25 miles.

The day after, I took it for a 25 mile run, air con on going out, off coming back. Ran fine, averaged mid thirties each way. No difference A/C on or off.

Took it to dealer the next day, to be met with slack jaw and no answers, The technician agreed it sounded like a DPF regen, but of course couldn't be. The car was serviced in October and they checked everything but found nothing amiss, though there was a ECU update carried out.

All well till today when the wife has driven from home to Leicester, about 110 miles. 70 miles into the journey it's doing it again.

Any ideas? I doubt that MB will be any use unless the car throws the issue up when its in there which is unlikely.

Edited to add. By the time wife reached destination the 'fault' has cleared itself. when it first started playing up the range was 326. It fell to 210 over about 10 miles but was back at 310 when she reached her destination. While it was playing up the instantaneous consumption was going up and down wildly even when cruising steadily.

Welcome from the Sacramento Valley SLK Enthusiasts!

I would park it at the Dealers service dept til they figure it out. It should still be under warranty right? You should get a free loaner until it is fixed.

Odd one for sure ...

Any faults should (but not always!!) be stored in the variuos ECU's and therefore be available for the dealer to read when hooked up to diagnostics ....

Thanks for the welcome guys and the response so far.

This issue doesn't throw up any error codes, or didn't the first time; I haven't seen the car since yesterday when it happened again. Certainly no warnings are showing on the dash.

The first time it occurred the dealer didn't scan the ECU, on the basis that there were no warnings on the dash, and they said the ECU was clear when the service took place a few weeks after.

The car's coming back home today, we'll see if it does it again and I'll take it back to the dealer in any case.

Thanks again.

Well, the car came home the 110 miles with no further issues, so we're none the wiser.

I'll take it into the dealer, just to make sure the problem is on record in case it develops later in life. I very much doubt that I'll get any help from the dealer in looking at the issue now as its so intermittent. It seems to be very unusual judging by the lack of anyone else experiencing the same on various forums I've posted on.

Unfortunately, my wife is starting to lose faith in it and is making noises about trading it for a Z4 as the one she had prior to the SLK was perfect over the almost 7 years she had it. Doesn't take much, does it?!
