I have a 2002 SLK32. It has about 36K miles on it and I've been thinking about changing spark plugs but am aghast by the price of the recommended plugs. Is there another plug that I can substitute for what is designated? I have a nonstock Porsche turbo that uses regular Bosch copper plugs. It runs just as much boost as the SLK32 does (16 psi) and is a track car (meaning full boost much of the time not every now and then on the highway). The Porsche has over 100 track events on it and also serves a sleeper semi-daily driver. The ordinary plugs have worked quite well for the 16 years I've owned the car.

As I do not have to pay mechanics labor charges (I do my own), I could easily change plugs every 15K for about 20 bucks. So why should I pay the outrageous prices for the platinums or iridiums?
