I'd venture to guess that the ownership age in the US and Canada is probably similar to the UK. The SLK is not among the top choices overall, I don't think...as a group we Americans are still too smitten with behemoth SUVs and trucks; SLK sales are in the mid four-figure range annually. But call it midlife crisis car or whatever you like, the SLK seems to attract the fiftysomething set like a magnet. And my wife and I fit that description, too.

Well driving a Pontiac Solstice GXP for a while as part of a project got me thinking that I should buy an open top car for myself. I considered the Solstice as an option, because at the end of the project I could probably have got the car from the auction at a decent price, but L/H drive only was an issue and the canvas roof another. Plus the brakes were truly awful, especially when considered against the performance which to be honest was quite sparkling if a little agricultural (big turbo, smallish engine)..

So folding tin-roof, two seats, decent performance, nice styling, didn't leave many options at the time. The Z4 tin roof version hadn't been launched, I've never fancied the MX5, Boxster was rag top of course and the SLK had just been face lifted.. So SLK it was. Still very pleased with it.

I'm still a bit perplexed that the SLK isn't much more of a hit over here in the States. I did see one the other day, but rarely do. It's such a great car but I feel like it doesn't get cross-shopped as much when I hear about people considering convertibles and the awareness of it is low. I suppose it could be chalked up to a lack of marketing and campaigning for it here but I wonder how much of that is done across the pond. I'd much rather have an SLK 55 AMG than a Z4 or a Boxter S or a Miata if the prices were the same with similar options.

And for a guy to choose it my god .:td:
Said the same thing to myself when I saw the Mini Cooper as #2 for women. I thought they were supposed to be the ones who knew about style and all that jazz!?!

Im shocked the New Audi TT convertible was not on there ??

Women seem to love the mini its the shape !
But such a bad bad build quality not a bmw spec as such ?
And so many common faults especially the early ones .

Good catch, I would have expected the TT on the list for the dames as well. Not necessarily because there's a new one though (that looks almost identical to the LAST one).

I just came back from two weeks of driving in East Anglia and Cornwall and both the wife and I were surprised by the number of Mercedes on the roads. But after driving on some of the roads in Cornwall I was glad I was only putting my rented Ford Escort at risk.

Exactly. I had a 2006 Cooper S. Thermostat housing leaks, power steering whine, Lambda sensors knackered (Engine warning light forever coming on even after replacing the sensors) rear exhaust (Right-hand side) rusts and falls apart and tire pressure warning light coming on when it felt like it (Even after replacing the thing) bonnet closing wonky if correct pressure not applied...:td:

Hi all

I must re-consider my SLK ownership I hate being in with the in-crowd , I prefer to be a lone wolf on the outside .

Cheers
