Well, Mercedes-Benz USA is helping to spread the stereotype.

Go to www.MBUSA.com and check out the PHOTOS & VIDEO section for an SL or other Mercedes and a man is driving in the video. The CLK and others alternate between man and woman.

Check out the same section in the SLK and the car is loaded with women in both videos, not a man to be seen anywhere!

Maybe that explains why when you select the wood option you can no longer select the sport package. Get the sport suspension, drive agressively all you want, look down and there's still no wood! :biglaugh:

Okay, enough of my bad humor!

Of course it's a girls car because when you own one it's a great idea to be male and single because of all the attention it attracts.

In the same way that the Ferrari is a saliva key car. If you own one of these it'll either be keyed or have saliva on it haha.

j/k :p

Its not lingerie or female clothing, basically the SLK is a gender friendly car which due to its metal folding hard top, brand, quality and performance is desirable by both genders.

lol, I think it's the opposite, the older generation r170 had more female buyers than the new. Initially they were trying to appeal to more male drivers, since statistically (IIRC) more men buy the r171, now they are trying to appeal to female drivers again.

I was at my local Merecedes dealer this weekend and actually test drove a new 2009 350. They said in their opinion that the 350 and 55 buyer is almost 100% male from their dealer's experience and the other models are pretty evenly split 50/50. They also have found the car to be a special category for MB. The SL is larger and heavier and usually a different demographic and not a car you would track or want to run the tail of the dragon in. The SLK is light and a great drivers car. They see it as really not a male/female product (some may disagree) but that it is really a great performance car and the longer the car is on the market the more that perception is becoming reality.

The R170 had about 70% female NEW car buyers, the R171 has around 60% female NEW car buyers overall. The 32s and 55s are about 50/50, while the regular models are clearly female biased based on sales data.

I agree. The SL is a different beast altogether. Our SLK was actually purchased, registered and insured by my wife. So statistically a female purchase. BUT it's very much OUR car.
We both enjoy R) it and we both think it looks great.
When were at Le Mans last week-end a grumpy old sod told us that our SLK was a hairdresser's car and that a 'real' car had a canvas roof that you fold down yourself. Turned out he was a Westfield (Lotus 7 / Caterham copy) owner.

I just pointed out to him that the SLK gives the best of both worlds, it's a cracking roadster and an excellent GT. And we got a tent, sleeping bags, airbed, change of clothes, walking boots, waterproofs and camera gear in and two people and still got the top down (it wasn't easy though)..:biglaugh:

You can't get a ham sandwich in a Westfield, though they are great cars......

On top of that he'd wimped out and driven down in some Renault people carrier thingy. Bloody lightweight..:butt:
Anyway, I'm being bit harsh, he was a nice chap really. All things said were tongue in cheek and when we packed everyting in and left with the top down, he admitted that the SLK really looked the business.

Mind you after a weekend in the French sunshine my forearms were bright red and killing me and it was 29 degC with bright sunshine, so half a mile down the road the top went up and the air-con went on. Try that in a Westy.....:biglaugh:

Call me childish, but...

Yes I've had all the "girl's car" jokes, but with almost 200 bhp, I don't care.

And, I've never before had a car where on our local dual carriageway by pass road, I can take on the weekend sports bike riders between roundabouts, and win! Ha!!

Childish as I said.

I would say to them, "Well, maybe it is. In the same vein that you don't go to St. Peters or La Louvre to see what a straight man painted; the fact no straight man has ever equaled Alexander's Generalship, etc. Greatness comes in Gay!"

Besides, tell your mates we "gays" generally prefer BMW's, Porsche's, and very large pickup trucks. I personally am partial to Camaros, what you call "murderer's cars"...

In South Florida, the SLK is not sold as a performance car, manuals are never stocked. Neither is any color that is not a version of silver, white or black. In fact the majority of SLK55 AMG cars, according to the dealers here, are sold to women, or to guys buying them for wives / mistresses, and never see anything more crass than a Nieman Marcus parking lot.

If you are a straight man, I will guarantee you, you can go all over the world and not see as many "beautfiul" SLK interiors as you will here in South Beach. Of course, many of them do not really need airbags! ;-)

As far as the soft top argument... Bring it here, and it will be slit. Not to be stolen, or even your CD's you left on the seat taken, just slit from people being an ass. The security of the hard top, even in a non-winter environment is welcome for a car driven every day. I doubt he drives his 7 to work and piles in computer servers as I do.

An SLK350 has 50 more HP then an original 300SL, but weighs almost 1,000 lbs. more. It IS the closest successor to the original 300SL's, and the SLK55 the SLRs. The SL has changed from sports car to luxury grand tourer. The SLK will hold the sports car moniker, at least until the SLA comes along.

But really, it was all a setup for the "no wood" joke! Ugh, I suck at comedy!

That's why they make motorcycles :)

Just messin' with ya' - I just bought the SLK350 and already planning to take her thru The Dragon. She feels great in the curves so far, so I plan to make a run within the next month to Deal's Gap and hopefully stay out of the way of those bikes. Should feel pretty nice though.

Hmm, in the motorcycles I owned, I never really felt like attacking corners with them. They were nice for a ride. (Honda Nighthawk 650 & Goldwing Aspencade.)

I never did with the cruisers that I had, but the Ninja650R says it MUST happen. :) Actually I poke along compared to REAL riders. I don't even pretend to be able to ride with those guys. I just try to stay out of their way.

Take a short ride with me and 1 of my riding buddies:

I'm doing the filming. :) Sorry for the thread hijack.:hijacked:

Nah - it's a typical case of sex sells!

SLK 200 may well be a chick car, but 300 or above is anything BUT a chick car if driven properly! :D
