Does anyone have the minimum & service thickness available for the front 6 pot 55 discs on 2005 SLK?

I was changing the castor arms/bushes on my 55 over the weekend and found my osf disc is corroded on the inner face, I'm looking to get them skimmed, just need to know if there is enough meat left to do it. My contact from the dealer is on holiday and would like to get it done in the next few days.

Also.... What is everyone's preference of front pads? I find the OEM pads particularly dusty? Any other preferences?

New 32mm - min 30mm....or when your slots have disappeared.:laugh:

So I've been looking into this a little bit more seems there are a couple of options to replace the front discs?

Option 1: Purchase 2002 ML 500 Front discs, have them trimmed down in diameter from 345 to 340. Also need the disc locating screw drilled (if preferred) and they are plain discs, so need drilling etc if wanting that look. Other than that, they look to fit geometrically the same?

Option 2: Purchase later SLK 55 1 piece disc. Also require a lathe to trim down from 345 to 340. Already cross drilled and lug hole in correct position. However disc thickness is 2mm thinner (30mm instead of 32mm) which means at minimum wear it'll be down to 28mm rather than 30mm.

Option 3: Bespoke made discs from Godspeed/Mtec. More expensive, rely on the ability to get off old rotors from existing bells.

Has anyone experience with any of the above? Interested more in options 1 & 2 as the discs are readily available and don't require too much modification.

There is a thread on pistonheads if anybody else is interested, would like to hear off some people that have these setups for any period of time.

Also pad options??

Eurocarparts had 50%off now on brake discs.
Take a look.
I've seen already, thus the post but thanks for the heads up. They only seem to do the ML discs, even the later SLK discs on ECP are 1k and no stock when I've looked last 2 days.

Option 4, fit Brembo disks :grin:

Option 5, replace outer rotor only (Torox)

I begrudge spending 5x+ the amount for an equivalent set of brake discs that ultimately do the same job as the originals. Also, in anticipation for using a Mtec outer rotor, I've already tried loosening off some of the bolts on the inner bell and they show all the signs of snapping, a small threaded nut and bolt exposed all it's life to hot/cool cycles will do that :crying:.

In regards to the 5mm larger rotors, there's no need for a lathe. All you need to do is install a 5mm washer on the caliper bracket to offset it and call it a day. Been there and done that and never gave me a single issue even on hard stops from 140MPH+.

Once expensive powerful cars have expensive powerful accessories :)

My genuine Brembo disks were £689 for the pair from ECP. I thought that was a decent price. I think around £150 or so more than rotors only I believe?
Also I now have a spare set of Inner's to fit some new rotors to.
The Pagid pads I have fitted are less dusty but not as good as the original Brembo items, I may change them soon. The bite isn't there.

Thanks for the input all.

I appreciate I may sound tight, and I am! :grin: As someone in the motor trade, I can't get my head around the money for these discs - there is nothing special about them for them to hold the price tag they do.

Anyway, took the discs to a local machine shop tonight, after measuring them they were 30.3mm on thickness and the corrosion has set in pretty deep on the osf inner face. After skimming they would of been well beyond wear limits.

The discs are now separated, surprisingly had no issues taking them apart nuts and bolts came apart beautifully. Tomorrow I'm going to drop them into a well reviewed Reyland Motorsport, who are local to me to have the outer rotors priced/made up.

I debated buying the later discs just to have a look and see how they fitted as the chap at the machine shop only wanted £20 to run the diameter down. I figure for the sake of a few quid now I'd rather keep it 2 piece.

Also had to order a osf backing plate too as that's corroded away, too! Now just got to decide on pads!

Can you elaborate? Do you have any pictures?

How will a shim on the caliper bracket compensate for additional 5mm width in diameter? Are you maybe referring to altering the caliper position in relation to disc height?

You would need to move the caliper sideways, away from the centre of the hub to offset that diameter which would involve moving the mounting holes or fitting a bracket. Though such a minimal amount, there may well be the clearance within the caliper to accommodate the additional width of the disc?

Here's a direct quote from when I did my swap.

"The calipers are from a clk55 (2005+).
The front rotors are from a C32 (since I wanted to go with 345mm instead of the super expensive 340mm SLK55 / CLK55 rotors.
On the front rotors, the retainer screw didn't line up, so I had to use a lug bolt to keep the rotors in place until the caliper was installed.
As for the caliper, I had to space it out 2.5mm (1 washer) to accommodate the extra 5mm in rotor diameter. I installed 1 washer per bolt between the removable mounting ear and the caliper itself."

That 2.5mm washer would fit between the pretty painted caliper and the unpainted ears shown in the photo below. I hope that helps clear up any confusion.

These are 2 parts so that's a core reason for the price hike. It's the same on Lotus, they are expensive on their two parts and the same with high end anything. My old RS4 makes these seem cheap.

I would never skrimp on the one thing that is between you and hitting a tree. It's the same with tyres. Things that make you go are important but the REAL important things are the items that make you stop.

Thanks; however the washer is only altering the caliper in relation to the discs height to essentially centre the pads around the disc (if you lay the disc flat on the floor, the disc height would be the measured distance from the floor to the top of the disc), you must of had enough width from the hub to the caliper to clear, luckily :grin:

To compensate for a wider diameter disc, you would need to move the caliper outwards towards the wheel arch liner - though like I said previously, 2.5mm on the radius could be within the calipers tolerance of clearance already.

Understand the principles but ultimately it's a circular lump of metal, same as any other car - 2 piece have some additional weight/cooling properties, that though nice to have are negligible on a road driven car. I personally wouldn't put tyres in the same category as brake discs, maybe pads.
