Hey everyone!

I am considering buying an SLK 55 AMG; would this be considered a downgrade from an E-class car?

im a little on the taller side, 6'2, and havn't test driven one yet.

I heard there is going to be a refresh on the SLK in 2014, is that true?

I currently have a 2010 e350 coupe

2 completely different cars
you will have to drive one.
we have many members that are taller than you
do a search, top right, for posts on that topic
No one know what the future brings but it is usually every 3 years so the r172 came out in 2012 so you can do the math

I would not consider any AMG to be a downgrade from a non-AMG car!

They are completely different cars. If you don't use your back seat, and you want to drive like the wind, the AMG certainly gets the nod.

If that's not enough for you, there's always the SL65.

Welcome to the forum.

You should drive one first. They are such vastly different cars as one is quite a large sedan, and one is a small side roadster. I would not consider it a downgrade at all.

I have driven E Class and SLK Class. Both are beautiful cars, but the SLK is much more fun to drive. In your case, it would REALLY be fun to drive because you are looking at the ultimate roadster (to me), SLK 55 AMG.

The new ones are even more comfortable than my older generation, so that is good for you. They say the new ones are better at driving long distances due to being more comfortable. Still, I would consider the E Class to be more comfortable.

Of course, you will have no back seat and a much smaller boot.

Finally, a new model. 2012 was the first year of the R172. Mercedes has 7 year cycles, with a "face lift," after the first four years.

Therefore, if the past holds true, it looks like this:

R172

Debut in 2012 MY (at dealers in mid-2011)
2013
2014
2015

Facelift in 2016 (potentially at dealers in mid-2015)
2017
2018

Then there would be an ENTIRELY new model in 2019 model year (potentially in middle of 2018 calendar year).

Again, this is ASSUMING, their past trends continue.

You can see though, there aren't big changes anytime soon.

A facelift is mostly body trim parts, things like rocker panels, bumpers and mirrors. Things you have to look twice to see them. The body it self does not change.

The inside of the SLK is tiny compared to an E class. With two on board and roof closed it will feel claustrophobic. Not mentioning that a sedan will always be more comfortable to drive than a spider.

That is especially true in these relatively low volume SLKs. A C Class facelift is more dramatic (for example the last one got an entirely new dash and headlamps in addition to the standard change of bumpers being changed).

It will be small by comparison, but I wouldn't call the SLK claustrophobic for myself. Now I understand others may feel differently. I find it feels fairly comfortable. This perception will vary greatly between people though.

two different cars, as mentioned above
roadster is a different animal than your standard sedan, and believe me going to an E-Class whilst all luxury is great doesn't have the same bite as an SLK.

However, it does boil down to personal preference
one of my friends is 6'6 and he comfortably fitted into the SLK...
was rather impressed...so 6'2 isn't a problem .....I am 6'0 myself...

hope this helps...

HI Airali2001

Its all been said , Im 6'1 & could drive our 55 every day no problem , Any sport car going from the E class is going to feel small , But get the roof down & that all changes & with the 55 you get a very nice sound track supplied as standard , Its the only way to drive wind in hair & V8 sound following you around .

Cheers

Andy
