I didn't think most members would see it in the new member section so I was going to try posting it here also.

I like the look of the 2009 better, facelift bumper and steering wheel are nice. Problem is, those things are replaceable and for $6,000 more, and with more miles, it isn't worth paying for... in my opinion.

I would get the '05 if it has been maintained well. Check these forums for the used SLK55 buyer's checklist and do a thorough check. Take it to a mechanic and get a pre-purchase inspection.

The '05 and '09 are essentially the same car. Major differences will be:
  • Brakes: '08 and newer non-AMG P30 package cars have downgraded brakes due to brake squeal complaints (normal for high performance brakes)
  • Transmission: Newer car will have rev-matched downshifting. Older car will not. Older car has shift buttons while '07 and newer have shift paddles. Can be retrofitted.
  • Front bumper and steering wheel are main cosmetic differences. (Along with wheels)
Again, between these 2 cars, I'd pick the 2005. Ideally, I'd look for an '07 with shift paddles or an '09 (transmission update) with less miles.

I was getting to it! :biglaugh:

05 r171 has that engine oil stigma hanging over it.

True, but was that ALL '05s? It would be something to look into but shouldn't be a deterrent if everything checks out.

Couldn't we pull a datacard on the vin and check? Not sure...

This one might be interesting? An '06 with 53k miles for 28k. A bit more than the '09 you linked but with half the mileage and none of the oil consumption stigma of the '05. Not a fan of the Asanti wheels though.

Pass emissions?

What are the chances your car will pass California emissions?

His car is stock as far as I can tell so there shouldn't be any issues with emissions.

edit: Oops, I see now he removed the resonator for an X-Pipe. This only affects sound and is NOT that much louder than stock. In fact, you wouldn't even be able to tell he difference except during hard acceleration. He didn't remove any cats and the muffler is in place so emissions will be the same.

I removed my resonator for a custom x-pipe myself. The difference in sound was so small that I went back to remove my secondary cats to get the sound I wanted. Since quicktwinturbo didn't remove the cats, it will still pass CA emissions.

How about a 2006 with 47k for 30k that's been in CA since day one? Full maintenance records and unique? Still has nearly 2 years and 30k extended warranty.
