Slk 320 Start Error

I agree with Jeff. "Start Error" means the immobiliser system is preventing the car from starting. The chances of it happening just after you took the key fob apart, and it not being related, are pretty slim. If the immobiliser chip has been lost, and no spare key - then sadly, it's a bit of an adventure, but not impossible, to rectify.
 
I'm with the guys on this but if it were an amazing coincidence then I'd be pondering cps.
Faulty CPS will not produce "Start Error" in the odometer screen.
From what I have read on here, only one fault will produce a Start Error message in the odometer screen, and that's an immobiliser problem.
 
You said the car was running before you changed the key fob battery, so there must have been an immobiliser chip in the key fob.

The immobiser chip and the remote door locking are unrelated - except that they both reside in the same fob. Two completely separate functions and the battery is only used for remote locking.
