SLK 250 CDI glass chip in vario roof

2402 Views 10 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  wja96
Hi there, having loads of issues with MB at the moment with my SLK 250 CDI

I discovered a crack on my vario glass roof with a small chip so took it to a MB dealer who, in conjunction with MB corporate deemed this to be not covered by warranty and gave me a £2.5k bill!!

I have been going around the houses with escalations and what not and not getting anywhere.

I am being told its not covered because it's down to 'external influence probably a stone', which is far from conclusive and would have to defy the laws of physics. It is impossible to for a stone to flick up, maintain the the speed of the car, then have such a force to come down and crack the roof, especially without me noticing it!!

I have told MB many times, that one of the many problems i've had was with the reclining roof, it was faulty and out of alignment, i had to get one of their engineers come out as an emergency as the roof wouldn't close properly whilst making a horrible snapping/cracking noise whilst attempting the close. My belief is that the crack in the roof is a stress fracture caused by this issue but nobody at MB is willing to listen to me. I had a mechanical engineer observe and agreed fully with my view as it was impossible to be a stone. But i would be interested to get other peoples opinion on the forum?

I have not had any conclusive evidence that its not a stress fracture caused by my faulty roof. They keep going to the same retailer, the retailer i was questioning in the first place (Temple Fortune) will achieve nothing as this is not an independent reviewer!!!!!!!!!!

If it was to defy the laws of physics and be a stone i think i would have heard it! And secondly i would not have engaged in a contract with MB to pay a lot of money for a car that can easily be damaged in this way. It Would suggest a very poorly designed product if that was the case.

In addition to the above, i had the other issues-

1. It was delivered to me faulty, with a permanent headlight on, was told this would just go off (which it didnt), so i spent the first day of getting my new car driving round London to try get it fixed (not impressed). I was then told the car would need to be taken away to be fixed. Now appreciate some things may get missed during 'testing' but something has obvious as this?

2. In August 2014, my car completely broke down on me and had to be towed away, told it was a computer fault

3. Not long after,my computer tells me i need a service, which after a few months and not many miles seems very weird, i was then told the car had not been tested properly and not reset so i would have to put up with the message/beep until it does need a service

4. As mentioned above, i had the roof not closing properly issue

5. and now this crack issue...

So i would appreciate any advice from people on where i go next or who have had similar issues

May Thanks
Dan

Surely this is covered by your automobile insurance as glass breakage.
Can you post a picture of the damage? Very curious...
If this were really posdible/true, we would all have with chips, dents, scratches etc on our roofs, no ??

At the least your insurance should cover it, but this should definately be an MB thing in my opinion....
As with modern tech and glass being used more and more on cars today .
The kia sportage have issues with the sunroof shattering and they know about it.

Other manufactures are having issues to .

Hopefully it gets resolved soon and your not out of pocket .

Funny kia reported to a clint of mine a stone caused his kia glass roof to shatter so would not pay for warranty etc .

And at this moment is going through ins and still waiting for a glass roof to be replaced .

Not merc related story but just thought id add it .
probably but then that wipes my no claims and suddenly my premium sy rockets and i'll end up paying the £2.5k anyway..

Will be away from my car for 2.5 weeks now but will try get someone to get me a pic

Gonna carry on fighting...
me too! :D

A photo of the location of the crack/or chip" should help a lot! Another point is that if it is a crack due to overloading as a result of the roof opening and closing is very unlikely not starting from the edge. In other words, if a crack is located away from the corners or edges, it's most likely due to some impact. By the way, if it is on the inside surface, then it can't be stone impact, but it could be impact from an object hitting inside the cabin or trunk if it is a convertible.
A crack or impact dent is not that difficult to differentiate, particularly if it is due to multiple application of forces. (I'm a former chief aerospace engineer, windshield cracking on aircraft is a very common occurrence.)
I'd suggest that you recontact MB headoffice in writing focusing on the crack roof issue with all your explanation and that of your engineer friend (not mixing other issues such as car not starting etc.) with the history of roof misalignment with corresponding documentations attached.
At the same time, not sure if it is common in your location or not, in North American, if your dealership doesn't cover the repair, a third party glass repair will charge just a fraction of the dealer cost. I have to say that the roof glass should cast substantially less than a windshield which should be about US$1,000

Glass claims don't usually affect your NCB.
