Due to my steering feeling awful and a tiny bit of play I decided to change the idler bush, damper and drag link. Gsf had good prices so I bought it all and stripped the car.

I have now found that the part of the drag link between the ball joints is different.

On the old one this bent downwards to miss the engine/gearbox but on the new one it goes upwards.

As Gsf list two numbers which on their website look the same (correct to my car) they have checked everyone they have in stock and all bend upwards.

Has anyone seen this before and what should this different one fit. I am now stuck with the car off the road and have had to order one from a main dealer for over £400 but I am worried it will also be wrong.

Thanks in advance
Marc

The total cost with the OEM damper, Lemfoerder steering idler, and Lemfoerder drag link came up to $284!!! Got this installed about a week ago and everything's great! Perfect fit of steering drag link from BMA autoparts! My car steers like new! Especially after I have changed two hydraulic steering hoses and flushed the steering fluid! Runs like a champ right now!!!:tu::tu::tu:

You can also PM me your VIN and I'll look up the correct part number for your car and can tell you couple online stores which don't charge arm and leg and sell Lemfoerder! I'm happily satisfied with them! Just ordered new engine and transmission mounts from here http://www.rmeuropean.com/default.aspx + discount code %5 =)
Will do them some time later!

Thanks for the links. Can you remember if your drag link bent lower between the middle joints or higher. All the pics on eBay show it going down but the supplier has checked the last 18 in the uk and they all bend upwards.

Due to time I ordered from mb but because of the weather it's been delayed 3 days so I have no car and I am worried the wrong one will arrive as the illustrations seem to mean nothing.

I have uploaded some pictures of my new drag link! I don't know if there was a difference between pre- and post-facelift models... As I've said, PM me your VIN and I'll look up the correct part number for your car! But if you buy it from the dealer usually they ask you for your VIN and thus send you the correct part. Hope you'll get the correct one since you already ordered!

Ok, the MB EPC catalog shows that your part number is different from mine: A 170 463 0015 To me it only means that there's a difference in drag link between pre- and post-facelift models.
Yes indeed, they are different! here's an old post I came up with:
http://www.slkworld.com/slk-r170-general-discussion/22617-interchangeable-parts-230-320-a.html#post244753
"You need to watch things with this because its pre and post facelift. For instance the centre drag link for the steering is different as I found out through painful experience." :(

Since my post-facelift (2003) part # is different A170 463 0115

Is there a difference for left hand drive vs. right hand drive cars?

I would assume there is a difference in drag links since the idler arm needs repositioning to the other side and the "lip" for mounting the steering damper (which is on the drag link itself) also needs repositioning.
I may be wrong but it's my first guess. :)

Hi, got the one from the main Dealer and its correct. Also only came to £313 with track rod ends but no nuts.

Its on but I can't use it till the weekend when I can have it tracked.

It does look like the early cars need the centre joints pointed upwards with the bar dropping down in the middle.

Ref LHD and RHD question above, would the drag link be the same or does the steering damper mount on the opposite site. Mine is RHD with the early link and the drag link conects to the damper on the drivers side.

I would have thought the idler and steering box connections wouldn't have made a difference.

Hi, apologies for re-opening an old thread. I am in the same situation and need a drag link for my facelift SLK230. Mercedes part no A1704630115, Lemforder 21672 01. The cheapest I can find in the uk is £185 from ECP. Does anyone have any links to alternative suppliers.
Thanks, Mark

You don't need to apologize =) I only have some online stores for the US. but I checked with them and they charge arm and leg to deliver to the UK! $150 average... Wait till some folks from England jump in!
