Lots of talk about liking or not liking the SLC43. And talk about the bellowing SLK55. Since I have had both, I thought I would comment. The 55 certainly sounds better with the V8 howl and burble at idle. And according to MB, the 55 is a tenth faster in the 0-60 (US) time. But I can't tell it. The 43 has almost instant torque and that seems like the biggest difference when driving it. I think the max torque comes on in the 2000's range vs. 4000 range in the 55. And the front end weight difference is noticible when cornering. The 43 does not plow like the 55 did. I have seen road tests lamenting the disappearance of the 55 from Mercedes's catalogue and the dismay that the replacement of the 43 is inferior. But what they are forgetting is the huge price premium the last 55's brought. The 2016 55 I considered had a list price of $84k in U.S. Dollars. The 43 I just purchased listed for $67k. This is certainly a reason that the 55 sales were so poor. For that kind of money, there are a lot of choices (even MB models) that are very appealing. So apples to apples, I think the 43 is a good deal. The 2016 SLK350 - a naturally aspirated six cylinder with 306 HP and 273 TQ sold for $67. My SLC43 at the same money is a lot more car.

I like some of the design changes on the SLC. Particularly the changes in the interior, steering wheel, seat covering pattern and the stubby shift lever.
I'm not so keen on the exterior styling although that's just down to personal taste.
I haven't driven an SLC43 but I know there's nothing in it 0-60 wise. I'd be interested to know how the 43 and the 55 compare beyond that point 60 to 100 and 100-155?

I drove both the SLC43 and several SLK55 before buying my current SLK55 last year.
I could have got the SLC for approx £36k from Carwow but opted to go for the SLK55 mainly due to the engine in the SLK55.
The SLC was a great car and nice interior but I did prefer the looks of the SLK55 and the engine note is awesome. The SLK55 was only slightly cheaper as a second hand car but it ticked all the boxes for me.
Having just come back from a few laps of the Nurburgring in Germany I can safely say I am delighted still with the noise and performance of my car.
Each to their own though.
Both great cars.

Am I right that the "stubby shift lever" can't be nudged left or right to change gear a facility I would hugely miss when spinning the steering wheel AND wanting to change gear, say whilst negotiating a slow corner or round-about.

I liked the SLC when I had a back to back drive in my 55 (AMG article for a magazine article)
The shifts were quicker than mine using the paddles with a nice pop and bang etc on down shifts. Being a new car was very nice and more than 10 years gap design wise.
My 55 seemed to have a harder push when accelerating and mine did feel a bit more planted or heavier. I came away from the day not at all envious of the newer car.

Can't say for the SLC but the 55 has both paddles and 'tap the gearstick' changes.

I play with both :D occasionally.

I agree. Having bought my SLC43 this July, my focus was on either a CPO SLK350 or SLK55, or a new SLC43. The SLC43 is a lot more fun to drive than the SLK350: particularly when manual gear shifting is activated, the SLC43 does not shift up automatically like the SLK350 I test drove did. And the few and far between SLK55s available were all priced at a hefty premium. I too think the 43 is a good deal and that is what I went for!

I also find the SLC43s Sport Plus drive program plays a nice brass band note.

I think the gearbox in the SLC copes better with the power delivery. Apart from that the 55 wins due to having a 'true' V8 AMG engine and the noise is 'real' whilst the 43 has a, dare I say it, manufactured sound track...

V8 vs Turbo; old vs new... both have their positives and negatives and has to be a personal choice :)

BTW: I do like driving a car that is becoming fairly rare in the market place (plus the resale price should hold a little better) ;) ;) ;)

When I last looked a few months ago on the UK website (how many are left) there was something like 460 R172 SLK55's registered or on SORN in the UK and just over 750 R171 SLK55's .

I certainly preferred the look (and sound) of both the SLK55s at that magazine photoshoot session. I didn't like the 43's 'designed by 2 teams who never met' exterior styling, hated the fussy front with the 'council house at Christmas' chrome pin grille and I thought that the interior was unnecessarily complicated and fussy.

M-B haven't managed to get the SLK/SLC styling properly harmonious since Bruno Sacco's R170, in my opinion.

Incidentally, the 'characteristic supercharger howl', which the article author mentioned about my SLK32 drive-by, turned out to be nothing of the sort! It was the noise from the crank pulley and idler pulley on the verge of failing! Now replaced under extended warranty - it's like a new car again!

The AMG article can be read in the January 2017 edition of Mercedes Enthusiast.

But will there ever be an R173, I wonder....??

Interesting thread as I've been looking at these two options. My heart still says SLK 55 despite the fact that there's not a lot of difference on pricing with late second hand R172 55 AMGs and some of the second hand SLC 43s.

My head says, the SLC 43 is a newer car and I know it sounds stupid but you can get it with a factory fitted reversing camera. It's been a while since I had a car without a camera.

Sad but true. :frown:

Luckily, the manufactured sound track of the 43 is a good simulation and continues to delude me into thinking I'm driving a V8 AMG instead of a V6 :smile:

Thinking back; the steering was lighter than my '55' but the handling through corners was, as near as damn it, the same... On a track you might be able to find if the lighter '43' is 'better' than the '55' but in real world driving on A roads the difference, if anything, was too subtle to tell :)

SLK is really small car and unless you park in very strange or difficult place you will be fine without camera. I lived without parking sensors in previous SLK and it was ok too. You can also install after market camera to SLK55, saw it in one of the forum member's car.

SLK55 should depreciate less than new SLC43. I could have bought new SLC43 for the same money, I bought used SLK55. It would give me warranty and new car but not the car I really wanted.

Neatly put, detecting a whiff of compromise when the SLC is chosen over the SLK 55.

Having driven both extensively the SLK55 has the better engine but the 43 is the better real world car.

Fundamentally the two cars are the same with the exception of the drivetrain. The interior and exterior styling has been very mildly reworked but the fundamental R172 is still there.

There is no getting past the SLK55 engine being possibly the best normally aspirated V8 ever in a Mercedes. It's a fabulous engine. Lets be honest though, the rest of the car wasn't good enough to cope with all that oomph.

The gearbox in the SLC is much, much, better. The power delivery (and especially the torque delivery) is much more accessible in the SLC.

Range and fuel economy are significantly better in the SLC although not as much as the 3.0l vs 5.5l would suggest (again, Mercedes did an incredible job with cylinder deactivation the V8 in the 55). Once you start to use the power (over 100mph on the Autobahn) the difference gets more significant though.

The balance of the SLC is better because it's not as nose-heavy as the 55. The 55 is a great dragster but it's a very poor handling car as it comes out of the factory.

And the SLC43 is a much better value proposition than the SLK55 simply because it's relatively cheap. You can get a new one for £38,000 in the UK at the moment. And I would argue that it doesn't need any extras (paint colour if you must) because it comes with pretty much everything as standard. Yes, an SLK55 is holding it's value well. But many, many SLK/SLC buyers wouldn't consider a used car or even it's residual value. They're just interested in the monthly PCP or lease payments.

So you're continuing your SLK/SLC adventure :) SLK55 is definitely nose heavy and it can be dangerous at times. I ordered winter tyres for my daily car, because SLK in snow wasn't that great last year. A lot of drifting when not needed ;) Have winter tyres for SLK since couple of years ago but I think I will just use them in UK and then retire.
