About 3 weeks ago "I" thought I'd ordered an SLC200 AMG Line in Fire Opal Red.

I hadn't heard anything more after a week so I contacted the dealer to firm up the delivery date, I was told that "they" would be placing the order the following week and that this was normal practice.

I chased again at the W/E and they got back to me today with a build estimate of late December BUT that there were no more build slots for Fire Opal Red until at least Jan 2017 with delivery expected Feb 2017.

I can see that at least a few cars have been made in Fire Opal Red as currently there are 2 SLCs on autotrader.co.uk (a 200 and a 250d).

The salesman seemed as perplexed by the situation as I am although I concede that he may just be having me on. I have no previous experience of buying a new MB, so can anyone help answer the following questions please:

Are the build slots colour specific as the salesman says?
or
Could this point to there being continuing issues with this colour?

Ordered my SLC in Fire Opal Red at the beginning of August with a delivery date at beginning of November.
Received a 'comms number' and a 'proposal number' about a week later - whatever those mean.
Not heard anything since, might be time for a quick call to the supplier tomorrow.

Errrr - the salesman is talking (rhymes with rollocks). Build slots are added sequentially and they can paint any car any colour in any sequence. If they want to they can even paint different bits of the same car different colours. I've done the factory tour :)

Without wanting to speculate too much I'd say the dealer is managing their order book to maximise sales bonuses. Or, sales of the SLC are so awful that Mercedes are having a factory shutdown. Or, there is a model year 17.5 spec change that is causing delays in production. Or, the new €750M investment they're putting into Bremen to build various new models is causing some delays.

But my best guess is that they were able to give you that whopping great discount because they've got every sales bonus imaginable coming their way and they need to register new cars in February 2017 (a notoriously dead time for sales of convertibles and of new car sales generally in the U.K. with the year change starting 1st March) so they've put your order off until it fits with their sales target requirements.

It is definitely not normal for a dealer to wait 4 weeks to place an order for a car.

The paint here is not the issue. An easy way to check would be to ask another dealer for a quoted delivery time on a car and ask for an unusual option (dynamic handling pack, driver assistance pack) to ensure it's a factory order. My guess is it's within 13 weeks.

I don't know what deal you're getting but I were you I'd be checking out some car brokers.
For example, Coast2Coast are offering SLC200 AMG line at £8k discount supplied by a Mercedes dealer, I'm sure CarWOW and Drivethedeal will have similar deals.
If there are any Merc finance offers (ie contributions towards the deposit) then you can take advantage of those and then settle early if you have cash.
No risk as all monies are paid direct to the dealer and nothing to the broker.

Thanks for the excellent feedback chaps, I ordered it through carwow to get £9.5K off list but then added a fair few options so I "thought" it would be a factory order.

The bit I don't understand is that he says I can have the car (to my spec) in white or pay extra and have any other colour (at my expense)
at the end of Dec. Fire Opal Red is the only one with the extended delay.

This is why I was wondering about there being continuing issues with the red colour. I'm paying cash and I've specced this car as a keeper so I'm concerned that there might still be problems which they're keeping tight lipped about. Red is my colour of choice for looks but I'd be dead sick if I get my ideal car and have the same issues I've just had with my current car. To plaigerise an old proverb "Once bitten, twice a bit paranoid"

It sounds like he has a stock car he wants to sell you. The white one. Id be happy enough to just wait to be honest. Get what you want, not what the dealer wants to offload on you.

I had a similar situation with my new A6 allroad. Originally I was getting a Mercedes GLC 43 but when the Audi dealer heard that he magically had a black A6 allroad Competition (350PS from a 3l diesel and no speed limiter, plus everything is finished in carbon fibre) with literally every extra added and £28,000 off the list price. He explained that the car was a dealer order that was to have been the dealer Principle's car for 6 months then sold on, but to keep a sale they'd let me have it. Dealers have stock cars coming through all the time. If you took the white car no doubt there would be the option that you didn't spec as well but do you really want a white one? No offence to people with white cars, but Fire Opal is where it's at on the SLK/C.

Thanks @wja96 you're absolutely right about getting what I want, not what the dealer wants to sell me.

I''ve just been speaking to him again, he says that many other SLCs were ordered at the same time and that they went through OK. Only my red one came back as unavailable until Jan (for Feb delivery) and I was really hoping not to have to wait that long.

Basically he said I could have it in ANY other colour in December (and the emphasis on "any" was his). Very strange!

I suppose I should just accept the delivery date for a red one... do you think is there any chance that it might come through a bit earlier... or doesn't it work like that with MB?

Speaking to my local MB dealership - SLC's are 'flying' out the door and take up for the new car has been good. Orders should be placed almost immediately (certainly there should not be a 4week delay in placing the order). Could it be that as you are using an internet based, discounted dealer they will be sourcing cars from various places and therefore may not have the same lines in to MB for procurement and delivery that MB dealership would?

In the end, with a 9.5K saving on list I would wait the extra time, get the car as wanted, with the wanted spec and in the desired colour.

My previously purchased new cars have all been ready within the roughly a week of delivery to the dealership... They should be able, at this stage, book it in to the workshop for the PDI and prep and give you an estimated collection date...

Latest update, the salesman's just got back to me saying that it can't be ordered in Fire Opal Red at all... even for 2017 delivery.

Boy, I'm really in a quandary now! It's a shame I'm such a tart about the whole colour thing. :crying::crying::crying:

@at31ashbourne: Great news, looks like you were right not to hesitate!
From the above it seems like I may be out of luck though :frown:
There was quite a bit of hestation on my part (see below).
I was initially looking at the SLKs, but by the time I got around to contacting the dealer they couldn't get hold of the model I wanted.
The SLC was just coming online but the prices being quoted were silly (>£400 / month for the 200 Sport)!

I almost decamped to Audi, at that time the Roadster was at an affordable price and I was feeling a bit pressured since my current lease would be ending in September.
However, after starting negotiations with Audi dealer, over the course of 2 months the price went up twice (from £295 -> £305 -> £325/month)! The first price increase was because some extra features were added to the base model (cruise control & armrest), the second increase made me sit down and have a rethink.

I contacted the Mercedes dealer again and the price of the SLC was now much more reasonable (£300/month), so I placed an order with them.
I then contacted Mercedes Finance to extend my current lease by 2 months (no problems there since I was ordering another Mercedes and the lease price for those extra 2 months was £10 less than before?).

So, yes there was too much hesitation on my part, I should have ordered that SLK early on.
Feeling very excited now that I've got a rough date from the supplier for delivery.

Nothing against the Audi Roadster, it's a nice looking car and the drive is excellent. However, I think the SLC looks more like a sports car and I think I would have always looking round at SLCs driving past if I was in an Audi - wondering what if......

No more Tenorite Grey or Canvasite Blue and now no more Fire Opal Red... the colours I liked the best are all gone, bu**er!!!!

Apart from black and I'm not going there again, it looks great but constantly cleaning it is almost slavery!

I feel your pain. Currently have a black C Class - never quite happy when I've finished cleaning it.
Had a couple of days off last month and waxed it as well - but happier but a lot of effort.

I bought a brand new black Ford Focus some years ago and right after I'd signed the paperwork, the salesman said (half jokingly) "you do know you're buying the very worst colour to keep clean don't you?"

It looked fantastic when I picked it up but after 3 days I wanted to go back and throttle him! >:D

Why not Hyacinth...
Why not indeed? your car looks great! I've just been pawing over the MB SLC configurator and googling the s**t outta it trying to make up my mind.

Guess I'm a bit miffed that I've got to pay extra £900 to not get the colour I thought was getting!

Well, after contacting the supplier, I have now also received the finance agreement with my registration and VIN.
Almost feels like it's in my hands.
