So.....

My car went in for its annual service and I had complained about the jerking of the car in Sport+ Mode

Service was completed and I was informed that they had updated the transmission software as an update was available

Now when I switch out of Comfort to just Sport Mode the exhaust note does not change like it used to!

Any feedback or help from other SLC 43 owners who have had the update would be welcome or from anyone who knows what the cause might be?

Thanks in advance

Not an expert on the SLC, but have a look at threads on the exhaust system valves.
I think that's where the sound generation comes from.

There's a few about then sticking in one position.

All I can add is mine is a 2019 SLC 43 AMG and mine jerks at low speed in Sport+ (10-20 ish mph)

I was also told that there were no software updates for my car last week (I had it checked as it was a week before the 1 year warranty ran out and my check engine light came on and it went into limp home mode on accelerating off a roundabout.)

There was a fault code on diagnostic - cylinder misfire but no cause found and it looks like they were thorough checking for possibilities.
My concern is it occurred just one week after my car's first service (again, before the warranty expired in case anything came up)

It is only in Sport+ that my exhaust note changes.
Sport + engages double declutching and faster gear shifts as well as an even higher rpm before the 'box changes up a gear, plus the exhaust flaps are open

You can always try the good will, as you have heard others have got an update
& therefore the update is needed.
Ask to speak to manager.
No manager? Go for director, regional.

Always go up when they say someone is not there.

Hi MarkChat

Thanks for your feedback

Well up to the point of my service my car always had a good exhaust note firing up Sport Mode and normal driving which has now vanished

Interesting that yours doesn't

I have contacted my dealer and waiting a response as to why this has now vanished

I will keep the forum updated once I have a conclusion

Is the lack of exhaust note change just at ideal speed, or while Your moving..?

Two questions on the cylinder misfire:
1) Can You remember what fuel level You had at the point of misfire?
2) You didn't by any chance get the codes, or can phone back & ask for them, as I've had a very similar problem & have the same MY19/390bhp engine as You..
I pulled the following codes - Google'd them but not able to say exactly what they are for My R172, which is newer that the SW on Col's code reader:
* P030022 - Possible coil pack..?
* P030200 + P030300 - Possible cylinder misfire codes..?

I've not yet gone to the MB dealer about these codes, as it's not played up since...

Mark they should be able to give you a printout of the software Update explaining its purpose.

There are lots of complaints from owners of the new 2020 model C63 AMG to the lack of pops and bangs over the previous version. Could be a trend.

Hi Martin

Its going back next Wednesday and I also called Mercedes Benz who have put in a request to the technical team explaining my issue

When I spoke to the service team they said that MB do not disclose the changes to them, to be fair I always have good service from them so I don't believe they are trying to fob me off

I always drive the car in Sport Mode and that soundtrack has completely gone :crying:, Sport + is just not manageable for normal driving but good for back road country lanes bursts but that is subdued also now!

When I go over next week I will ask about a printout , so thank you Martin

So I had a replies from a couple of fellow SLC43 owners who didnt' have the same characteristics of my Sport Mode prior to my update

I have discovered that my car was a 2016 build date but registered in 2017, could this be why?

Really I am at a loss as to why I had a great soundtrack just in Sport Mode?

Any ideas?

So tad warm inside yesterday, so went for an evening spin around some nice North Hampshire roads:

Here is some observations relating to this thread, once the engine was up to working temprature:
> When stationary, changing from Comfort to Sport does not change the Exhaust Note.
(Changing to Sport+ while stationary, raises the tick over rpm)

> While moving & over riding the Auto box with the flappy paddles, changing from Comfort to Sport does
not seem to change the Exhaust Note when accelerating from 3000 to 4000 rpm..

Even my wife says my car is quieter in Sport Mode as the whole sound track in Sport Mode was really quite loud

So my mistake and apologies to all, as I should have said that not only switching over from Comfort to Sport changed the exhaust note but the whole 'soundtrack' was very loud and nice

So I am at a loss

Is is possible the previous owner may have had some tuning done so the exhaust opened in Sport Mode

Maybe a dumb question, but as nobody else who have answered doesn't have the sound, possible ?

I spoke with MB Technical Team today and they don't know either

Anyway thanks for the feedback, the car is booked in next week

Fuel level would have been about 2/3, as I filled up and had only driven 90 miles. The car had sat in the Airport car park for a week, and I was on my way home but had driven 20 miles at the time it occurred.
The dealers rep. did say three times (somewhat accusingly...) that a low fuel level could cause this which I'd understand, especially as I was accelerating off a roundabout onto a motorway slip-road.
No code report, sorry

It was the dealer who voluntarily told me they had checked if there was a software update and there wasn't - not something I asked about

I think the exhaust sound being softened by the flaps in Sport mode is normal with the car firmware since at least June 2019. Your car must have had an old version of the firmware - which was current at the time your car was made / last updated.

Presumably the new updated firmware corrects some issues but the "aesthetic" downside for you is that now only the Sport+ mode has the "enhanced" exhaust tone due to the flaps being open

I think you may need to accept things as they are as they won't reinstall an old firmware and the current state of your car is the official Mercedes position on how it should be.

Ah. At the launch of the SLC 43 AMG, it seems that Sport and Sport+ opened the exhaust flaps:

From the official Daimler site:

https://media.daimler.com/marsMediaSite/en/instance/ko/The-new-Mercedes-AMG-SLC-43-Performance-roadster-from-Affalterbach.xhtml?oid=10004069

Typical of AMG: an emotively appealing sound
The new SLC 43 also meets the personal wishes of the driver when it comes to acoustics: the standard-fit sports exhaust system comes with two automatically map-controlled exhaust flaps. In the "Eco" and "Comfort" transmission modes, the flaps remain closed most of the time, this resulting in an acoustically restrained note from the six-cylinder biturbo engine. In the "Sport" and "Sport+" modes, the exhaust flaps open earlier and more spontaneously, especially if the driver prefers a dynamic driving style. The effect: the typical, emotively appealing AMG engine sound. The statutory noise prevention limits are met in all transmission modes.

Well if they won't reinstall the old software then the car will have to go

I fell in 'love' with the soundtrack when I went to purchase it and now it sounds lame IMHO and I am very unhappy

No offence to other SLC 43 owners, its just that I drove it around in Sport almost all of the time and now that nice soundtrack has vanished

I may have to cut my losses and look for a SLK55 with the V8 soundtrack

Thanks for finding that because I thought I was going mad , because clearly since I bought the car I was driving it in Sport Mode with such a nice acoustic soundtrack which is now gone !!

So if they won't reverse the update then I guess I have only 2 options, sell it for an SLK55 or would an ECU remap be able to do this ?

Why get rid of it??
Just get used to driving it in Sport+!
Then you have everything you need - all the performance of the SLK55 but with better fuel economy, even in Sport+ mode!

I like to think of the Dynamic Select as a variable inhibitor on car performance.

Sport+ is the car just as it is. Exactly what you would get with a properly tuned production road sports car.

Sport is a bit of neutering to tame it down and improve fuel economy. The motorway drone at higher speeds with exhaust flaps open is also cut, as the flaps are now not open all the time.

Comfort is a severe restriction with pulling away in 2nd gear, later gear changes and more reluctant throttling but the CO2 emissions and fuel efficiency pass taxation laws and emissions controls so it is the default mode for the car so that the glossy brochure numbers look better for the environmentalists - From switch on (and therefore in Comfort mode) the car is not an inefficient pollutor

Economy is a severe hindering of car performance that makes it feel like a saloon car with an engine half the size. - maybe useful for when you want/need to eek out your almost empty tank of petrol but that is about it.
