Hello

I'm new here but alas am feeling the opposite of my user name.

I've had SLKs from 2014 and they are my favourite car. Alas I've had a fair amount of bad luck with them:frown: and have spent a lot of money.

1st car - got bumped after I'd had it for exactly one month and then a year to the day was written off by another driver.

2nd car (replacement) - had intermittent battery problem which took a lot of garage time and money to resolve and now has new problem with intermittent ignition failure. Unfortunately so far even the MB experts can't fix it.

Would dearly love to carry on being an SLK driver (if I don't run out of money) and am praying for an end to this unfortunate turn of events.

May all readers have excellent motoring experiences.

Welcome from Canada

If you haven’t, please use the 'search' feature at the top right of the page for your questions as they have probably been asked before. Remember, ‘Search’ is your friend.

If you wish to become PM (Private Message) capable or to ‘edit’, you need 15 posts. To get those 15 posts quickly, just go to the ‘New members introduce yourself here’ section and welcome enough new members to obtain your needed posts to PM/edit. You can always pm a moderator.

Want to post a picture? Start a new thread or make a post, click ‘edit’, click on the ‘paper clip’ or ‘advanced’ and/or ‘manage attachments’ then ‘choose file’ then ‘upload’ and ‘submit’! If Iphone pics, you need to rename any additional pics as Iphone names its pics all the same, image.jpg.

Want to ‘like’ or thank’ someone’s comments? Use the ‘like’ button to the right or the ‘Thanks’ button, bottom right of any post you like. This saves you having to comment or use the 'quote' button so we know who you are asking or replying to or referencing.

New members should be aware that the 'New Posts' link next to the 'Search' link top right of the info bar is a great way to see all of the posts you have missed since you were on the forum last. Remember to click 'mark forums read' under ‘quick links’ when you leave.

Welcome.

The good news is that there's a good few slk'ers in the Midlands!

Read about your intermittent 'ignition' problem elsewhere. ( FB ? )

WHEN we find it it's either going to be an expensive ECU or a silly £20 part!

What has been changed / probed / tests so far?

Hi Nimbus
Thanks for your warm welcome and concern. MB say they have checked 'everything' and all appear to be working as expected. I suspect tomorrow they will phone up to say still can't find the problem and at point I will give up and collect the car. And then grill them in terms of what has been done and make sure I get all the print outs.

Then I will sell the car to a garage, poss P. ex, so they can deal with the problem. Get another car. Not sure if it will be another SLK as I have had my fingers badly burned already. :(

I'd be careful as MB keeps all records of servicing in their computer systems. The next owner may find out and if you have not disclosed you could end up with a bill.

I agree you have had a bum experience but I'll bet it's something remarkably simple really. I'd suspect an ECU fault but the way MB operates they would just swap it out, charge you a grand or two and wait for it to happen again .... not the way to go.

Ask them if ANY codes are recorded in the systems. You know the car has quit on you so something MUST be logged. Nothing logged would strongly indicate the ECU.

I'd be tempted to get a bluetooth OBD reader and something like Torque and leave it permanently connected. When it quits again a run of diagnostics to check before getting it going again.

I work in Software/Electronics and an intermittent bug is the worst to find I can tell you!

What was the original intermittent 'battery problem'?

Hello again, Nimbus

Thanks for taking the trouble for your thoughtful email. Yesterday I picked up the car from MB, and the engineer was very good in that he stressed they had checked everything, all connectors etc etc. An experienced mechanic had driven it each day over the 3 days the car was with them with a diagnostic kit attached so it could pick up the fault if it occurred. Needless to say it didn't! I asked if I could have a print out of all the tests etc and he more or less said what you did: ie no codes were recorded so there was nothing to come out of it.

He offered me to leave the car with MB again and said one of the mechanics would use it as their own car and drive it with the computer attached (ie the only way they can find the fault is for it to occur in situ). He accompanied me to my car and i enquired about settling the bill (MB charge a standard £156 fee for a diagnostic test). He said there was no charge as they could not locate the fault. At which point my faith in human nature (and MB) soared as it was obvious they had put in a lot of effort into trying to locate the problem - and my petrol gauge had indeed gone down a bit so clearly someone had been driving it.

I'm now in a strange place with all this. I could go P.ex and get another SLK but the purchase would wipe out my savings (!) or just sell the car via one of these we buy any car (and rip you off in the process) dot com. And then buy another car at my leisure. I have the use of my husband's car so it's not essential to have my very own. Or, take MB up on their offer to retain the car and see if they can get it fault, but it may not fault for some time and it's just prolonging the agony.

Feeling gutted though, as I bought my beautiful SLK with the intention of having it for many more years ie it was to be 'the car' for me.

Re the original intermittent battery problem (the saga of 2 years ago) what happened was at the start of the day the car would not fire up because the battery had drained out overnight. The garage tried to identify the fault and I replaced both the alternator and the battery. Eventually they tracked it down to one of the sensors (I can't remember which one) and this sensor was turning itself on at night and this is what was draining the battery. The garage replaced the maverick sensor and all was fine until 2 years later.
