Anyone have the issue where the auto will up shift at the slightest touch of the shifter?? Down shifting takes what I would assume to be normal travel of the shifter. And exactly what does the lever interact with to make the up/down shifts??

Thanks in advance!!

Fixed it

In the 2001 SLK 230,, there are no "micro switches" that enable gear changes. What there is, is a gate that moves a tiny plastic wiper against a resistive plate. The electronics in the shifter detects the change in resistance and shifts the transmission accordingly. About the most the average person can do is gently remove the W/S switch and spray lightly the vertical plate with ELECTRONICS cleaner. The resistive plate is in the rear of the opening near the spring loaded gate.. Do not touch !! This is about as close as you can get to "No user serviceable parts inside".

Further the S/W switch is not a switch at all, but rather a hall effect or proximity sensor that detects a small conductive bit of material.. Again, no user serviceable parts inside. Unless of course you are an electronics engineer with NASA.

There is an adjustment Left to right via the sorted screws holding the shifter mechanism to the floor and the intermediate plate.. Which by the way are blue Loctited to the floor..

Sorry, no pics but once you get in there it is pretty simple.. Lots of threads on getting there!!
