I'm facing a similar situation Ray,
I have a lump of rustiness welling up on the left side of my rear screen.
Long experience of MB's,and even longer experience of cars in general makes me think that the clean it up and fix it routine will not take in the long term. Both our S210's had practically whole body resprays under warranty, but Mb would not shell out for new panels, and despite the body shop doing a belting job on treating them, the rust came back. Okay, it took five years, but it came back. The body shop manager's opinion, when I asked him for it candidly, was always replace the panel if you can, or put some new metal in. for the rear screen surrounds, that's a tricky, if not unviable proposition. So i'd say go for a rust free replacement, and give it some prophylactic treatment before you fit it. and good luck, and let me know how you do it!!!
