My car is a 98 SLK 230 - great shape, 70k miles.
Lately - and only every so often - the top closing operation stops just after the trunk lid reaches the full open position. It always retracts back after this stutter. Strangely, things get back to normal after an hour or so.
Stranger still, this only happens after the car has been at my ski resort office for the day - elevation 11,000 ft. Never happens at lower altitudes.

Any ideas?

Welcome from NE England.

Have you checked the hydraulic fluid level in the roof pump on the RHS of the boot/trunk behind the trim panel. There is a 'viewing window' in the side of it - quite common for seals to go, and the fluid to leak out - often from the hydraulic cylinders above the roof headlining, leading to visible oil stains there.
