So instead of turning off the headlights, I've accidentally turned the knob to
Right-hand parking lamp. Which I only found out this morning when I saw one side of the headlights being on....terrible mistake =(

Why do people use right or left hand parking lamp for? Even when the engine is completely off....I realised that the car doesn't automatically off the lights. Of course I was thinking...."There goes the battery" Sigh

It's the parking light, IIRC, commonly used in Europe. The light farthest from the curb (far side as they call it) is the one that is lit when you're parked on a dark roadway so other cars won't nick your parked vehicle.

Speaking of car batteries, it may be worthwhile to invest in a battery trickle charger.

etyu got it spot on.

I have been to sporting events and whatnot that had people park on dirt lots. Sometimes, you will see a Mercedes even here in the U.S., and they will turn on the appropriate side park light to help protect the car on the dark parking lot with no markings.

I've never had a good time to try it myself other than in my driveway for fun.

Many years ago it was law in the UK that cars must show a red light to the rear and a white light to the front on the off side ( road side) of a parked car. There was a range of little parking lights that clipped onto the top of the window and plugged into the fag lighter socket. Or crocodile clips onto the battery. I got so fed up with flat batteries that I liberated a road works oil lamp that I hung on the side of my car :biglaugh::biglaugh:

It is useful in the countryside. I know some pubs with small car parks where a few folk have to park on the unlit road, or cottages hard up against the roadside without off street parking. It is a lot safer to leave parking lights on so cars coming along the dark country lane have a chance of avoiding you. Being able to switch one side on halves the drain on the battery.

VAG cars use the indicator stalk for the same function – when the ignition is off using the stalk lights the parking lights on one side instead of the indicator. This can lead to accidentally leaving lights on if you indicate when parking up and don’t cancel the indicator.

True, but you get a warning "Gong" when you do that. (My other car is a Touareg).

If you intended to use the park light feature, just ignore it. If not, switch it off.

I had some fun myself with the lights after I bought mine. I went to work one morning and after being there a short time I got a call that I had left my lights on. So I went down and turned off my parking lights and went back to work. An hour later I got another call that my lights were still on. Perplexed at this point, I spent a little more time outside and figured out the lights, lol.

In the UK, The Vehicle Lighting Regs. 1989 state that if parked on a road with a speed limit over 30mph then BOTH pairs of position marking lamps (side or parking lamps) must be on.

Clicky Clicky.

I dont think many take much notice of it Woolly. Its like parking half on the pavement. ( something that annoys me ) Even the police dont seem to think its an offence. When I said to park half on the pavement involves driving on it, isnt that an offence. Met with a blank expression.

We get quite a few people speeding on the main road through the village I live in. The people who live on that road complain about people speeding, yet park their cars half on the sidewalk, just to let them go faster - how does that work :confused:

I live in a restricted access road ( no motor vehicle unless requiring access) its also a 7.5 ton weight limit. Its a monkey run for the world and his wife plus any HGV that feels like cutting through to the quarries. Seems reporting HGV's breaking the weight limit is pointless as a prosecution is not possible unless the breach is witnessed by a police officer.

Parking on the pavement is an obstruction. I'm not just being pedantic, its bloody dangerous when you are forced to go out onto the road with a pram in busy traffic because someone idiot has blocked the pavement. Even more dangerous for someone in a wheelchair.

Jon - There are local election in May. Now seems like a perfect time to mention this problem to your local councillor and ask what they are going to about to get your vote (and the rest of the residents in our area). They'll get the police to do a few spot checks for you. Worked like a treat for us on a local junction that was no-right turn, I think they caught 20-ish drivers. The local papers & TV will like it too because is an easy way to fill space.

Have you tried reporting the vehicle to the Quarry Operators / Haulage Company?

I do when there is a name on the side. Its never the quarry owned vehicles. They know better. Its the independants and the odd rogue driver. It will carry on until there is an accident. We have a primary school on a blind double bend and of course all the mums park all the way round. I think the furthest anyone would have to walk to the school would be at most 1/4 mile if that. You take a chance round those bends at school times despite the 20 mph limit.

Hey Everyone: Thanks for the explanations. Can you believe this, this morning it happened again. My office capark security guard actually called me because he is so afraid my battery will be dead by the end of the day.

Now, if the purpose is to warn people of the car and to avoid accident, technically you can turn it on the entire night and it shouldnt really drain off your battery right? Just wondering....
P.S I'm not very literate when it comes to cars technicality.

etyu: Thanks for the explanations, that makes sense now. Of course in Singapore, its such a small city, we have lights everywhere hence such function is kinda redundant.

Jon - You've a primary school nearby as well? Jackpot!

Kids are great emotional pull for politicians at election time. Should be a doddle to get your local councillor to shake the tree for you, police do spot chesks, get the quarry manager and school kids to pose for photos in the local paper & TV, get a quote from quarry manager about not employing any haulage company that breaks the rules, maybe a donation for playground equipment.

If I tell you I have been campaigning about this for 25 years without success. Even as Parish Council Chairman some years ago, I had a police traffic inspector try to tell me that the No Access signs at each end of the road were "advisory" only. I was quick to point out that he was wrong and as a senior police officer it was about time he knew the difference between an advisory and a mandatory road sign. But all I get is " we dont have the manpower to enforce the law" Unfortunately it wont change until a child is injured. That was the only way we got a weight restriction was when an eight wheeler clipped a pram and the women of the village blockaded the road for a day.
