There I was, top down enjoying the sun, when one of those obnoxious Boy Racers in a de-badged Japanese Rice Rocket pulled up along side of me in the left lane. A subset known to all, gray primer paint, 4" exhaust pipe that sounds like a Tiger Tank, radio " WFO" with some sort of grunting totally obscured by the bass. At any rate, the road ahead went from 2 lanes down to one in about 50 yards. Now I didn't fancy staying behind that lout and suffering the
onslaught of noise, so when the light turned green, I proceeded to move out at a smart pace so as to merge left ahead. Well... evidently this was
perceived as a challenge by my tormentor and he floored it, banging gears as hard as he could go. Looking over at him, I pushed down on the accelerator
and and the SLK responded like the Starship Enterprise going into warp drive. As I glanced back in the rear view mirror, he was far behind, still making
lots of noise and giving it all it would take... to no avail, as I merged left with him receding rapidly in the distance. Bremen did a fine job of assembling
this SLK & good breeding shows.

The first couple of lines including "Japanese Rice Rocket" made me think you were going to talk about Japanese motorcycles. I thought, this is not going to turn out well. Eventually (and I am pretty dim witted) I realized that you meant something like a Civic which would not present even a challenge. :burnout:

I agree, had it been a crotch rocket (rode them hard for 40+years) no way would have the SLK prevailed, as indeed most cars can't match the power to weight ratio of a bike. No... this was some type of Japenese hop up, low to the ground, wide tires, Turbo powered engine (or at least that badge was on the car) & it sounded well.... quiet rude. Whatever, it was just outclassed... in more ways that one. Now if he had a Mini Cooper S... That might have been a different story. Mine is hell on wheels. Really don't know which would prevail in a drag race.

Wifey drives a 2012 Mini Countryman S. I will agree with you that it is a kick-in-the-pants, but hands down, I could take that car off the line any day, any time. Granted, her car is a bit heavier than the standard Cooper.

There is of course the reverse of this effect,

pulling up to a set of lights, I see in the other lane a small 1.4 vauxhall corsa, so as not to get stuck behind him I pull into the other lane.

Now, it's wet, the road is slippery and it's about 6am, the lights turn green, I put my foot down gently, stay exactly where I am, traction kicking in, while he blasts off into the distance..

even in comfort mode and starting in 2nd gear in the wet, there is far too much power in the AMG to do any meaningful racing..

I'm waiting till I see him again in the summer :)

We have a similar 2 lane to 1 lane after the traffic lights where we leave our suburb.

I have yet to be behind anything as we merge......

I hate this Rice rocket label. I accept the existence of a class of drivers - called Chavs over here - with a large tail pipe and large noise, but Jap cars appeal to another equally valid motoring circle. They may perhaps lack the privilege of being born into a good family and good eduction- perhaps - not always.

I know of fair few very decent individuals who own WRX, Evo or GTR. Do they suffer from bad breeding? Would you call a WRX or Evo or a GTR also a Rice rocket as well? One of these would perhaps have put you in your place.

I realise we all like to have a boast when we beat someone in traffic light GP, but this has got under my skin. WTF has rice got to do with it anyway?

Nakulan7 - cool off Dude, chill my Man !

Rice rocket is the derogatory term for a tarted up Japanese car with no guts to back it up.

I personally love the GTR's , Evo's etc but they are a totally different thing.

The original post was likening it to the Chav with a standard Vauxhall and turbo badges and big exhaust. They need to grow up.

No need to get p****d off as i am sure no disrespect for true Jap Muscle cars was intended.

The best way is to look across and look down your nose and let them roar off. When your driving an SLK you dont need to prove how good it is. But its fun to show them sometimes :biglaugh:

My favourite spot when in the mood is a set of lights near me on a dual carriageway just before a bend where the camera van lurks. If I get a boy racer on the outside of me I sometimes gun it off the lights then back off as I hit the bend and watch the boy racer hurtle round the bend to be caught by the speed camera van. :D Pity is its not always there

Sorry guys. I was not in a great mood when i read the OP. But for some reason i always get annoyed when i hear the term ricer. May be it is the fact that it has some regional connotation which i am certain is not what the OP intended.

And i have had to cut down on my rice intake due to weight gain.

I personally detest the guys running the 4" diameter exhausts - seemingly just to create noise (per the OP). What I do admire is yet another generation of guys (and yes gals) getting their hands dirty with cars.

I've never considered Evo's, STi's, GT-R's, Nissan Z's, Mazda RX's, Miata's, or any other legitimate Japanese car "rice".

I think here in the U.S. that term is reserved for people who take an old inexpensive lightweight (usually Japanese) car and proceed to spend ridiculous amounts of money on questionable appearance hardware (decals) while reserving a smaller portion of their budget for anything that would make the car faster. The classic "ricer".....Honda Civic, fart can muffler, decals, giant wing, decals, oversized wheels and tires on the rear of a FWD hatchback, decals, fluorescent lighting inside and underneath the car, turbo decals, ridiculous camber, more decals, window tint, decals, gold plated custom license plate frame, decals, bondo, decals, primer, and some decals to finish it off.

I think these car enthusiasts are going for more of an ummm "artistic statement" rather than traditional performance. It's a different community with its own set of standards.

These "ricers" are not to be confused with the tuner community for small Japanese cars that take these small 2 liter-ish 4 cylinders and bolt on huge turbos for incredible HP (until they blow up). The cars are not generally very well balanced designs like factory solutions or very reliable but they can be extremely fast in a straight line when they are running.

Reading the title I thought the post was going to be about erectile dysfunction. Not that it has ever happened to me...

I shudder when I see these 'tarted-up' cars. Briefly followed an Integra Type R that some idiot had lowered and stiffened.. Car was porpoising along the M62.

In standard trim the Integra Type R DC5 that I drove a few times a few years ago was a pretty impressive. Would definately give an SLK a decent run for it's money, very quick car.
