Can anybody tell me if i can fit my own rear sensors with a simple kit or is my 250cdi (peasant spec) in need of a canbus kit?
Thanks in advance

Even if you put a simple kit and have a problem, there are canbus power boxes available as an extra for less than a tenner..
What sort of kit were you thinking about?

Mermoto
Just the sort of thing u connect to your reverse light, four or five drilled into the bumper, mic in the cabin somewhere
Hi
Where do i buy a box from and is it easy to fit?

Would even fit a electromagnetic system if i could find out if it would work as they are simple to fit
Here you go :

12V CANBUS RELAY FOR FITTING CISBO PARKING SENSORS POWER FROM IGNITION | eBay

It uses an earth, the reverse 12v and a 12v ignition source to make sure the kit receives a full 12v...

You can even get aftermarket sensor kits than replicate the OEM style now, but I've never tried them, so I can't say how good they are....

Something like this :

Car LED Parking Reverse Backup Radar System Reversing Kit + 4 Sensors 12V DC | eBay

Showing my ignorance here - but do the electromagnetic ones only detect metal in other cars as it gets closer?

Edit:- Sorry - just clicked on the advert link and educated myself. Apologies for intrusion.

The big problem with the electromagnetic ones is they rely on motion to disrupt the magnetic field. So, they're not great for things that move slowly. The other problem is they are not very granular. So you get told there is something there, and how close, but not where it is. If they were as good as the ultrasonic ones all the car manufacturers would use them. The fact that they don't speaks volumes in my opinion.

My local Mercedes dealer supplies/fits a Cobra 4-sensor aftermarket kit but most of the retrofitters use Steelmate kits. I believe the Cobra sensors are flush, like the ones from the factory whereas most have a little pimple on the bumper that they clip into.

We have Parktronic on the CDi 250 and it's fine, but when I drive the 55 I don't really miss the parking sensors. If necessary, I just get out and have a look.
