Reverse light signal

2725 Views 12 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  jackal_82
Hi All,

Right my stereo install is nearly finished but i'm in the process of fitting a wireless reversing camera.

The issue is i need a reverse signal to the headunit so i need to know which wire in the cabin is the reverse signal.

The cable colour for the reversing lights in the tail lights is grey with a yellow stripe (both sides) but i cant find the same cable in the cabin so i'm stumped.

Does anyone know which cable it is?

Cheers

Karl

Your best bet is a steering wheel control adapter - Connect2 and Metra do them, and as well as providing steering wheel controls (for most headunits - check to make sure that yours supports them) they also provide signals FROM the CAN networks for things like reverse, handbrake on, 12v sense etc etc. Even if you don't want to use the steering wheel controls then this is the best way to get a reverse signal.

It'll save you running a long wire back from the tail lights!!

The pic show one of the Connects2 units I've used with Alpine gear - the short wire in the top left corner is wher it hooks into the headunit. the rest of the connections are via the Quadlock, with wores breaking out for reverse, handbrake, etc etc

This one is a STK279 with the Alpine pigtail

Thanks Sean but i thought the connects 2 only worked with audio 20 installs mine is comand (although there's not much left of the comand system now)!
Connects2 do a number of kits ..

If you've pulled out the comand stuff then you should have a CANBUS pair thats not being used - you could use one of the adapters provided you don't mind splicing it into the wiring in the footwell ...

Wiring diagram here for the Connects2 SLK adapter - you should just need to hook up switched power, ground and the CAN pair, and you'll get the 4 outputs listed ... plus if you have a compatible headunit, steering wheel controls with the correct pigtail...

What do you mean by canbus pair mate?
There should be two brown / red wires (brown with a red stripe) in the wiring to the comand stuff - they are the CANBUS connection ....
I've found them like you say there are two brown wires with a red stripe, if i go for the connects 2 do you know which cables i connect the Canbus to on the connects2 adaptor?

There doesn't seem to be a detailed wiring diagram available for the connects2 kit.

Cheers
I found it the easiest/cheapest, just to run a wire from the rear light to the HU...
There's quite a few pinouts on here for the Quadlock - all you'll need to do is connect up the CAN wires from the car to the correct wires in the adapter - I'll take a look at a diagram and see which ones you need
This is the canbus steering wheel control I used. This will give you reverse signal, speed pulse, etc as Sean says.

Comes with a wiring diagram. Basically you have Can Hi and Can Low. In the car brown and red is Can Hi and brown is Can Low.

Cheers Col,

But there's quite a few brown wires in the footwell!

Do you know which one specifically is the Can low?

There should only be one which is ran together with the brown and red wire, hence the term "canbus pair". In my car this was towards the outside of the footwell.
Found them cheers col and Sean
