Well, after looking at all my options and my bank account, I’ve decided I’m going to remove all four of the utterly worn-out rotor and pad sets on my 70K mile 2005 R171. All replacement rotors and pads will be Brembo (two-piece at the front). I’ve seen some good (though LOUD!) videos at LegitStreetCars et al, I have the correct manuals, and the tools, and — I hope — the brains to actually do this.

Any advice, prayers, videos, and encouragement most welcome!

Wow.. seems like replacement season at the 6 pot club! I have just replaced my front rotors and pads but I'm ashamed to say I caved and had them done at my India. Lots of recent discussions on the subject for you to check out and many helpful replies to my request back in January. Anyway, good luck!

PS.. the Brembos look great and are supposedly an upgrade from the original.

Did mine a few weeks ago, rears need some external torx sockets or better still spanners.
You need one for the caliper mount bolts and a smaller one for the wear sensor mount, sorry can't remember sizes.

The reason i say spanners is that space is limited, I didnt have any so had to remove the ARB drop links.

Fronts are a bit easier, calipers are attached with cap heads, m10 Allen wrench IIRC and some smaller hex sockets for the bridge piece.

The pad retention pins may also be siezed in place depending on how long since last out, best to check these first and get some easing oil on and allow to penetratell while you're doing the other work (and having a brew)

Other than that you will need a small torx key, T25 I think, to remove the disk retaining bolts.

I struggle to let a shop work on my brakes because:
1) They always want payin
2) I'm more than capable of doing the job and believe ill do it better. Most shops will do bare minimum.
