My srs light has been on since I bought the car. Das says it's the drivers side sensor. I was waiting to replace it, until winter, when I was going to have the seat recovered. I found nice replacement seats cheaper than having to recover them so it was time to replace the sensor. The connector was slightly corroded so I cleaned it and cleared the codes before trying the replacement sensor, No joy. Went to try the replacement and found it was not a match.

EPC says it's part number 001 820 0726 09 so I ordered one off the fleabay. Mine is a three wire, and the replacement by that number was a two wire. It seems that number is generic for air bag sensor even though it has a bar code. There are three other numbers on the sensor, one of which also has a bar code.

003 97288 10 1579 3

with bar code KB4K97881579 770 and below that 0 285 001 164. I have seen other sensors on the fleabay which are similar in appearance and claimed to be for a 1998 230 but the numbers are slightly different.

The questions are

Which is the important number to identify the sensor and is there an updated number to the original sensor.
EPC has a note that the replacement sensor needs to be coded to the car. I guess just clearing the codes won't be sufficient.

per epc, yes a0018200726 is your airbag sensor

NOTE THERE IS NO 09 after your part number

you want your datacard also?

and the sensor must be programmed

Thanks but the problem is the replacement was also a 001 820 0726 09. Even though EPC gives this number it's not the correct part. That is the puzzlement.

First picture original part in car three wire. Second picture incorrect replacement two wire. Both 001 820 0726 09

The 003 number appears to be the difference. I don't know how to search EPC for those numbers.

From the actual part as can be seen in the attached pictures. 09 for both the original and incorrect replacement.

Will search the epc with the 003 numbers

Thanks, I appreciate it.

I'm still confused that the EPC number is 001 820 0726

and there are different 001 820 0726 parts both with 09

You can call this one resolved. The part number that seems to matter for the 1998 slk 230 is the Bosch number.

0 285 001 164

Another twenty dollars from the flea bay and all is well.
