Was it these ones ? Mine made the noise under load in full lock
After changing the lower arm and 2 drop links, today I discovered the source of the rattling.
The driver outside brake pad is rattling in the caliper on very bumpy roads. Change the pads between them and same. Need to fix this. New pads will do the trick or what?

Is there a missing anti rattle spring?
Are the pistons/slide pins jamming so that the clearance isn’t being taken up?
If the pads are well worn then certAinly replace them and do a thorough clean of the calliper. Replace the rattle spring and use your favourite brake grease, copper, aluminium or ceramic.

Surely if the anti-rattle spring is pushing firmly on the pad, then it cant rattle!


If there is still loose movement, like in the video, then either the metal backing plates on the pads are worn/undersize, or the caliper is worn where these touch it.


The pads were not filed to get them to fit when last changed were they?


More likely the anti-rattle springs have been incorrectly fitted, allowing the pads to rattle, and slowly wear against the caliper where the steel backing touches the caliper.



If new pads dont fix it, then it is new calipers.

Not 100% sure on this one but are there two types of pad for the 350 , one for sport pack and the other without.

Just thinking if wrong pads have or can be fitted into the caliper you have ? Smaller size pads would allow the movement and cause the noise ..maybe but not sure

Are your calipers sliding or twin pot calipers?


I only have experience of twin pot calipers and if you have the same I am curiouse as to how they can rattle around that much if the anti-rattle springs are pressing the pads down into the caliper correctly. The spring should push on the pad top edge, so they are pressed down onto the pins.



Also my pads do not have enough room to move around inside the caliper. I have to clean the calipers and "copper slip" the pad edges to get them to slide in and out nicely.


A clear video would be very nice :wink:


Also, in my opinion, I would not fit any "anti squeal" pads untill you have found the fault causing the pads to rattle. It is quite obviouse to me that if the pads are rattling that bad, then something is wrong with your brakes. This is not "Normal" so you have a fault. Can you be 100% sure the pad will still be in position when you next hit the brakes?



I would be unhappy driving my car if i knew i had any fault with the brakes! :frown:

Brake pad noise in the caliper

You say the anti rattle springs are in but are they up to the job? Springs loose their springyness so these may not be properly taking up the clearance. Are these the originals?

Have you tried bleeding the system? A small amount of air could create enough of a compressible space to allow a rattle when your foot is off the pedal, but not enough to feel 'spongy' when you're braking.

Are you 100 percent certain the noise is coming from the front ? ?

As when you hit the road surface it can be missleading and be from the rear not front .
To pinpoint the noise you need good hearing and some skill . :grin:

Change the pins with original from MB same
Change the brembo pads with new cheap ones and still the same
Change the pins and spring with mintex and still the same
Now i ordered new brembo pads, the cheap ones are bad, breaking is not as good.

I did that yesterday no air, still rattling.

As when you hit the road surface it can be missleading and be from the rear not front .

If I press the brake pedal the rattle is gone.

Can you post a picture of your brakes?


Still dont know if they are two pot or sliding type?


I have just done all the brakes on my 350 and no problem like you describe!

Hoping for a picture of yours, showing the anti-rattle spring.


The spring should be pushing down on the top of the pads, pressing the pads down into the caliper






The pads are pressed down with the spring so they are compressed onto the pins. This should stop any up/down, or side to side movement, except against the spring pressure. In the picture above, note that the spring is in contact with the pads at the top in the middle (the "wedge" on the spring pushing down on them, against the pins).


This alone would stop any rattling if assembled correctly! (It is possible to install the springs upside down and therefore allow them to rattle :wink:)



Also there should be a very small gap between the pads and the disk, 0.1mm to 0.5mm max (governed by the "flex" or"give" in the main seals). If ther is any more than that, then the pistons are not holding their forward position after braking, or are being forced back by runnout on the disks.

Is the rotor warped and pushing the pads apart? Have the wheel bearings been checked for tightness?

Just throwing a pennies worth in here - have you checked the disc (rotor) minimum depth? My SLK200 has had one set front set and I replaced the rears recently. Low mileage too! So worth a check...

Went today and they check there is no play in bearings.


Just throwing a pennies worth in here - have you checked the disc (rotor) minimum depth? My SLK200 has had one set front set and I replaced the rears recently. Low mileage too! So worth a check...
They said they look ok. No lip, they are still in specs.
