Hey everyone. I recently started having a little issue with my 2002 SLK 320. When I start the car in the morning or anytime really when the engine and transmission are cold, when I start driving my car won't shift out of first. It will rev up and hold in 1st gear. When I stop, put it in park and then back into drive, the car shifts fine. It sometimes judders a tiny bit when shifting into 2nd through 5th gear but it's very subtle and it dosen't always do it. It's at random. The transmission is due for a fluid and filter change and I plan on inspecting and if need be replacing the plastic connector for the transmission control module. Anyone else had this same issue with their 2002 SLK 320 with the 722.6 transmission? I'm hoping that it's just dirty fluid and changing it out will remedy the problem. I don't have any check engine lights and there is no violent or sudden jerking or slamming into gear from the transmission. It's just that 1st gear issue.

First thought, if it's fine from 2nd to 5th, put into W and then it'll pull off in 2nd .. not really a fix tho tbf. >:D

According to MB Medic (amongst others) the no.1 reason for AT gear change issues is low fluid.

You may need to bring your plan for atf + filter + connector forward somewhat .. sooner rather than later ..

Sounds like low fluid level. For some reason, many of these cars didn't come with a dipstick. I'd order one and check your level before you drive it again. If that is the problem and you keep driving it, major damage to the clutches will result.

Hi, /\ /\ /\ Absolutely 100% agreed :wink:

TBH in all my years of rebuilding 722.6 in various Mercedes Models I don't ever recall seeing one that came with a Dipstick :wink:

I can only speak to 2001 NA and Japanese but also W211 E Class but none of them came out of the factory with dipsticks in the trans as far as I know. They were sealed for "life" which is nonsense.

If a car has a dipstick it is because someone did a service and bought the kit.
Others and myself are of the view that 100, 000 mi is time to change oil, filter etc.
This sounds like low fluid to me as well. It could happen when really cold but should disappear after a couple of miles of driving,

Recommended Fluid...
Mercedes Synthetic ATF...Part Number 001 989 21 03 10 or suitable substitute.
Daimler/Chrysler Sprinter & Crossfire....Part Number 5127382AA.
Dodge Magnum, 300C & Grand Cherokee.... Chrysler Type 4 fluid.

The Mercedes transmission does NOT come equipped with a dip stick for checking fluid level. The filler
tube has a locking plug in it from the factory. When fluid level needs to be checked use a screw driver to pry
the lock from the plug and remove the plug as seen below. Ensure vehicle is parked on level ground and
apply the parking brake.
Purchase the dip stick from a Mercedes Benz dealer using part number 140 589 15 21 00 shown below.
While in Park at idle, with fluid warm, use the tool to check fluid level by inserting the dip stick into the filler
tube until fully seated, wait 3 seconds, then remove the dip stick and check the fluid level indication on the
dip stick, as shown below.
Dipstick tool for Sprinter & Crossfire use Miller Tool 8863A, Magnum & 300C use Miller Tool 9336. Grand
Cherokee comes equipped with a dipstick. Sprinter/Crossfire uses Trans fluid 5127382AA and can be
topped off with no more than 1 quart of Type 4. The Dodge Magnum, 300C and the Grand Cherokee use
Chrysler Type 4 fluid.

Thanks again everyone. Just had the transmission serviced. The transmission shifts smoothly now with no issues. Looks like it was the electrical connector. There was a little fluid in there. Thankfully the fluid was clean and the pan had no metal pieces in it at all so the transmission is in great shape 😁

If you spend some time and read your owners manual you will find that the engine management system keeps the car in a low gear untill the catalytic converters are up to temp to reduce harmful emissions.

Think about this too. The fluid softens the insulation on the wiring and eventually will cause a short that will go right into your ECU so timely and cheap insurance.
