I've searched the threads but didn't see it. It's that time for a new battery and I will change it myself. I've looked and there are several choices for battery replacement but I would rather ask SLK owners for recommendations as to the best bang for the buck. It's my 2006 SLK55. I extended the battery life somewhat with a good trickle charger but think it's just that time. What are your recommendations ?

Thanks, Frank

Frank,
Here are a few threads. I went OEM using M-B Roadside Assistance and it cost me $165. I have heard of folks getting aftermarket ones for as low as $100 or so with a special deal.

The only thing I would tell you NOT to do is take it to the Dealer to have them replace it. They will charge you the $165 for the battery and then another $120 or so to put it in. Call Roadside Assitance and they'll come to you and install it for free. (If you've spent $150 or so at a Dealer in the past year or so.)

Best Wishes,

Anyone know how much the stock battery weighs? I'm considering a battery by Deka (same as Braille I believe).

649MF Premium (54.5lbs)
9A49 Intimidator (58.5lbs)
9AGM49 Ultimate AGM Series (58.5lbs)

On my kit car, I will be using a Lithium Ion Battery
(acid battery weighed about 11kg, Gel battery (red top 25) weighs about 7kg, Lithium Ion battery weighs just over 1kg)
With the above battery weights, bear in mind this is on a car with VERY few electrics, but I have provided them, as a weight comparision between battery types.

Is there an opportunity, for a (big enough for a SLK - or multiple smaller ones) Lithium Ion Battery.

To save more weight, on your SLK?

I also have a 2006 55 and replaced it with the Bosch Part #78DT-850B. ( this is a top post group 78 battery). A couple of others in the treads used this battery.

The books say a group 48 fits, but it doesn't on the 2006 55, you need something under 11 inches long like a group 46.

Took about 5 minutes to change myself and cost just under $110 to do.

Yes, I did the same for my SLK55 AMG. I drove my SLK55 AMG to a local PEP BOYS and they helped me measure the battery and I bought one made by BOSCH and the size was "almost" the same. I remembered that the "height" was off by just a little bit. But it still worked fine. They do have one with the "EXACT FIT", but were out of stock and I could not wait for a few days for them to order it. They refused to install it for me as they usually will do for no charge. I guess they were scared they will do some damage. But I knew how to do it anyway and it was not all that difficult. I did bring with me a "jumper charger battery" to connect it to the SLK BEFORE disconnecting the defective battery so that the "memories" in the SLK are not lost. Anyway the first Bosch battery I got from Pep Boys was defective and died a couple of months later. I took it back to PepBoys and evidently they knew and had a lot of returns and they just swapped out for a brand new one right away. No problems since then.

On my SLK280 I was no where near a PepBoys. So I went to a "Discount Auto Parts" in the "Deep South" and bought one that was the "exact fit" and I put it in without any problems.

Both of the above were a lot less expensive than OEM at MB dealer.

Or you can have MBrace roadside assistance get one for you (still less expensive versus at the MB dealer). I did not use this option due to I was under a tight schedule so I just drove to a local PepBoys and got one.

Good luck....

I'm going to use the Bosch battery if I can find one at a Pep Boys. Thanks for everyone's input.
