I have a 2000 SLK 230 Sport Kompressor. After a while I got tired of the lid of my trunk not staying open. If I knew how easy and cheap it was to change it myself I would have done it much sooner. I ordered two genuine MB 170 750 00 36 pneumatic struts at www.MercedesPartsCenter.com on Monday and got them Thursday. There were $13.83 each and I paid $10.95 for shipping. A little high, but I'm glad I finally ordered them.

I looked for installation instructions online but the only ones I found mentioned removing the rubber stopper and triangular mount (except the reply in this thread) and my car doesn't have them. I just propped the trunk open with a pole that was laying around the garage and popped the small metal clamp off the top end of the strut using a small flat head screw driver. It came out easily. I did the same to the distal end and removed the old strut. I pressed the socket end of the new strut onto the ball. I had to twist the bottom end to accomodate the configuration of the ball and socket on the bottom. It press fit perfectly. I exchanged the other side the same way.

It took me longer to write this than it did to change the struts! I wrote this so maybe it would help someone else.

Nice write up and pictures . . . It was about the same story with mine. I think I paid like $18, but got free shipping . . . (These are for a "generic" brand.)

My struts had enough lift in them that I could do them one at a time. Obviously I had to be a bit more careful doing the first one, but one of the new struts was quite capable of holding up the trunk lid. )No rubber stops on mine . . . ? )

I also popped the clip off the end of the first strut I did, but then found you really just need to pry it up enough to release the ball from the socket. No big deal either way, other than in trying to chase down a loose clip if it gets away from you . . .

Nice job. I just did the one for the front hood, it went from "good" to "no good" overnight. I paid around $70 shipped, it is a German "OEM" one.

The old one comes off, and the new one on, in the same manner as you described.

As I am an old infantryman, I just used my head to hold the hood up while I swapped them. Your mileage may vary.

Current MSRP from the dealer - $17.50 each. Discount dealers will sell them for about $13.

Trunk Lid came down on my wrist....not fun

I have been putting off changing the trunk struts until yesterday. While I was washing the car I opened the trunk lid to wipe away excess water in the groove around the trunk opening. I let go of the lid for a second to grab a cloth and it came down right across my wrist as I yanked my arm away...It was like a dull axe coming down on me....that did it... I ordered the struts from AutohausAZ for 15.95 ea. and to save the $12 shipping cost I ordered a fender pad to bring the order to $52...why didn't I do this A YEAR AGO! LOL

Yeah... you gotta be careful with that lid... I learned my lesson the hard way too. I was taking the groceries out of the trunk and I was standing right in the middle under the lock. And as soon as I released the lid it hit right with the lock in the middle on my head! I almost saw the stars coming out of my eyes :biglaugh:
Then I said - no more procrastination =D

Same Here - thanks for posting this!

I ordered the same parts for my 2002 SLK 230 and I had the same results. I found it tricky to get the spring clips back in place so I put a glove on for a better grip and so I could press it in place with my fingers. It's easy, really.

I'm surprised about a difference after I replaced my pneumatic trunk struts and how easy it is to replace them. Before replacement the lid of my trunk usually didn't stay open. Now I can drop it from the very top (top open position) and it won’t bump down and close. It will just gently go down and wait until I press it with my hand to close it.


I got mine at local MB dealer. Part number for R171 is 'A171 750 00 36', price 22€ for one. Replacement … easy, in few minutes.


To replace trunk struts it was necessary to remove the rubber stops (I have R171). Otherwise I was unable to open trunk lid enough to mount trunk struts – trunk strut is just too long and it is not possible to press it with a hand to make it shorter. Rubber stop is of two parts: rubber and plastic mount. Both must be removed.
