Hello all
My IR portion of my key fob got broken. I have seen sellers on eBay selling new blank key fobs with uncut keys. Is it possible to swap my cut key and it’s chip to the new fob and do the key turn press buttons sequence to get the new IR to work my doors?

I didn't think r170s had ir, just rf for lock and unlock function.
Very Very Early ones were IR ;)

Jeff, I've never seen one with IR in UK ;)

Most pre and post facelift cars have RF Locking, some still have a red window on the end of the key, but the circuit board inside is RF ;)
My 2002 still has the red window, my 2000 does not ............ Go figure ;)

Only other thing to note is that "Synching" procedure in the Handbook and discussed on the forum does not work except on IR Cars, I've tried a load, MB reliably inform me the PCB comes pre programmed on the RF ones ;)

HTH :)

Ok well I guess I was wrong about it being IR the remote on my SLK230 and my SLK320 both have the red window so I assumed. But my question still stands if I bought a new virgin fob is there a process to allow the new fob to function if I used the key and chip from the broken remote?

The circuit board in the remote got damaged and stopped working. I replaced the case with a new one and put in a new battery but still would not work. And I didn’t want to have to pay $200-$300 to get a new remote.

I already replaced the case and battery, no luck. I was just trying to find out if I bought a new virgin fob would it work with out a trip to the dealer. Nearest dealer to me is 35 miles and cost is crazy.

I was planing on moving the key and it’s chip to the new fob if the remote door unlock would work.

You could try a car keysmith. some can do the programming but MB wants their money and that is also why they want oyu to prove to them that you own the car.
Mr locksmith might make 2 copies and have his henchmen steal your car :D

Yes the key functions correctly just the remote lock unlock does not. Been this way for a year now.

well it was explained to me that the ir pad and primarily the rf also in the pad should unlock
now the radio antenna works ok with the radio? if not, the cable connection might be loose or off
your early model would have an antenna in the bumper if oyu do not have an outside antenna

But I know for sure the remote was damaged. That why I want to know if replacing one with a virgin one from eBay will work with out a trip to the dealer.

i really don't think you are going to get away without giving that deler like $250

cool update vehicle detail when you can

Update your profile, model and year like this:
Top right, click on Account Details, then Account Settings,
In Vehicle Details: model and year like: 2009 SLK350 or whatever you have or
put 'looking for an SLK'
Then Save.
