:rb I have a 2000 SLK 230 Sport. It came with AMG 17" rims chromed and Continental front 225/45's and rear 245/40's. The chrome is failing along the rim sides so I have been thinking of getting other rims. The question is can I use a 16" rim (listed for non Sport Package) instead of the 17". Which brand of tire is recommended for the 16" as well as the 17" rim? I don't plan to race the car so I am looking for a good road tire. Also, I have noticed the left rear has more wear than the right rear. Which rear is the "drive wheel"?

I have 16" rims with Pirelli P7 (205 front and 225 rear) on my 320, and the road holding is fantastic. But Pirellis are always good.

Also, in my opinion, the higher profile 16" gives a smoother ride.

I agree on the ride of the 16" tires. I'm running Toyo Proxxes Tr1's. 245/45 rear and 225/50 on front. Nice ride and good traction.

Thanks for the information. I will keep it in mind. Since my tires on the front are still real good I decided at this time to replace the rears with the same brand. Later when I can save up the money I might go to the 16" rims. I have other little things I want to do to the car. Mike

I can get them at Walmart of all places at a competitive price. Later when I can save up the money I might go to the 16" rims. I have other little things I want to do to the car. Mike

winter chrome

i had the same issue with my wheels. instead replacing my wheels i opted for the winter chrome process to refinish my wheels and use my same tires, after talking to several distributors/refurbish venders, i chose LA Wheel and saved 30% and they are the most straight with answering my questions.

Thanks for info. I'll check them out. My chrome is failing along the rims. I will have to check in my area to see if anyone can do something about it. I don't think chroming is as good as in the past because of the envirnomental constraints of the chemicals they can use. I remember when in the 60's and 70's chroming was a popular thing to do.

we use the michelin pilot super sports on our 01 Sport package SLK 230. They are awesome. and if you like to feel like your superglued to the pavement, these are the tires to have.

I've got the Hankook Ventus V4's on mine, wasn't what I selected but what was already on it when I bought it. I've seen quite a few recommendations for them on the slk's. I've got to say they ride quiet and grip the road unbelievably well on dry pavement. However when it gets wet out the car becomes quite a handful. Living in the Northwest it's hard to keep the car garaged in the rain. If I lived in a dry climate I'd probably stick with the Hankook's. Living where I do I'll probably look at other options when it's time for tires.
