Hello all, new to this forum. Just acquired a beautiful 2001 SLK320 from a family member who owned it for ~ 10 years (he purchased 3 years old as a certified pre-owned from MB dealer). Has about 46k miles, been perfectly maintained thus far. Love the car. Wanted to ask if there are certain preventative maintenance I should consider in addition to the scheduled work. I plan on putting on 3-4k miles/year. I did some searching and have seen a few things about transmission fluid, as well as some issues with the crank position sensor, but couldn't find a list of recommended preventative work. Thank you in advance for your help!

Do you have your maintenance and owner's manuals?

One thing I am cautious about, especially for low usage vehicles, is tire age. I think it comes from the motorcyclist in me, on a motorcycle I only got two pieces of rubber between me and some potentially very nasty road rash, ......or worse. So I replace the tires every 5 years no matter what the tread depth is, on every vehicle I own.

Yes, have the owner's manuals, and the tires are definitely > 5 years old, will be replacing them for sure.

Instead, have fun and burn them off!

Thanks all for the info and the welcome!

Was curious how many have preventively changed the crank position sensor - that appears to be an issue in the 320's engine particularly in the E and ML classes. If that goes, looks like you're stranded. Also, so far no vibration in the wheel, are you all changing out the steering damper preventively as well? Thanks again.

Welcome from Hillsboro, Oregon!

Steering dampers seem to last about 50k miles, so it's pretty much a no-brainer to replace it now since your car is near that figure. If you have access to a lift, it really is both cheap and simple to do yourself.
