Hi everyone,

I recently stared autocrossing with my 2001 SLK230 Sport (6SPD), and I wanted to seek some advice regarding suspension improvements. I currently have the stock springs and shocks.

thanks,

Jonathan

h&r sport cup kit or koni coilovers depending on your pocketbook. adj koni shocks and a set of amg oem (eibachs) springs from a slk32 would be a good starting point and upgrade for the 230

Well, my first thoughts would be to try shocks designed for the car, the AMG ones. Stock designs tend to take into account weight. Now any SLK320 ones may not do the trick as they may be expecting the heavier engine.

Always try to take weight of the unsprung part of the car first, that will improve the most. Lighter wheels and tires. Then, go with shocks designed for your car with it's engine, look for shocks that have different specs for the 230 versus the 320.

In my Fieros, I used Koni's because I could adjust them to change the attitude of the car, to dial out the factory understeer. In my R171, I use the sport suspension from the factory.

In the SLK's, it's hard as hell to figure out what you should do because there are so few people that experiment and can advise you of the best and worst. I even tried to see if Tire Rack could give my address to anyone who bought R-Type tires for SLK's to find out which ones worked best, but they wouldn't.

Coilovers are NOT the answer unless you want to be in a modified category where your car's weight will gaurantee you pretty much will never win a trophy. Coilovers are an automatic bump to STREET PREPARED, and in some places, MODIFIED as in gutted race only car category.

My advice would be to investigate some koni adjustible shocks, and some lightweight rims with R-Type tires. Grab some HP+ pads if they make them for your brakes, and pump in some Pentosin race fluid and you will stay in stock class and bring your times down a lot.

I am currently the SE Florida A-Stock champion in points for this year, even though SLK was bumped to B, I stayed in more competitive A to keep my points.
