Hi all!

I'm thinking about buying SLK 280 2006-2007 and I need your opinions about their current prices. I don't really know if I can trust KBB and Edmunds web-sites as I have no idea how exactly they calculate the "fare price". The only fare information would be real sale statistics, but I doubt they have it. Most probably, they estimate the price basing on their own formulas, which most likely do not take into consideration the current recession. Say, there's a dealer in my area selling a 2006 SLK with a price tag of $27000 (I'm in Nothern California, USA). I wonder if there are many potential buyers for used luxury convertible cars these days... Probably, not that many. So I guess a dealer should be willing to negotiate the price very significantly if he does not want this car to rust for months and months in the parking lot, right? So, KBB can show a price of $26000, but who will buy it for that price? Nobody... But the dealer still needs to sell the car somehow, right?

So, if you could please share your opinions about current SLK prices and year-to-year depreciation and how hard/easy is to sell an SLK these days - that would be just great.

My ideal car would be SLK 280 (not black) 2006-2007 with a navigation system and automatic transmission. The price I'm thinking about paying is somewhat about $20000-25000 (before taxes). What do you think?

Hello,

the dealer who sells this car, is it a MB dealer or an indy dealer?
or is it a ford, jeep, etc dealer?

if its not an mercedes benz dealer, you can for sure go at least 5K down on the price.
I am personally not the expert but my best friend,as mentioned before here alot is a business development manager at MB at south Cali',

He gave me the advice if a non MB dealer sells an MB they have to sell the car and can not risk to play games and should make an easy deal with you.
Because they can no afford to keep a MB on their domestic lot, since people do not go there to buy that car.

when I bought my SLK the "ford" dealer asked for $17.500 and the KBB was around 18k. But since it was a ford dealer my buddy told me,tell them " 13k " and we end up making a deal for $14.500.

And I was always told "never pay retail" not even on a brand new car.

remember, the dealer wants your business, you do not need their business.
You are in control...go with that attitude to the dealer.

last but not least, take the car for a full inspection to the MB dealer, which should only cost you around 100 bucks.

alskor - I use a combination of Manheim auction prices and eBay. I think $23 to 25k is probably realistic for a mid mileage car (15-20k), but do keep in mind that summer prices tend to ramp up a couple of percent for convertables. I have no idea what todays economy is going to do to that...

I also feel like the '280 has retained more of it's value than the '350 or '55's have.....

eBay and Autotrader, for sure. You'll see what is selling and for how much. They may be asking more, but they're not getting it...

about black color: guys, I live in California. can you imagine a black car here?.. we have 37 Celsius today...
anyway, I like silver or gold. the perfect color would be gold, but I don't see many golden SLKs...

HBK, thanks! it's a good idea that non-MB dealers would probably go down on the price significantly. I wouldn't mind buying from a private owner, but not many of them sell these cars through craigslist.

I'll check autotrader and ebay.

I love a black car in california... it looks the best! Add a smarttop module, drop the top before you get to the car and the heat wont matter!

i may be a new member but i am familiar with this discussion

mine is an 06 slk350 (black on black, sorry) that i wanted to trade in on an 09 C63 only to find out that the slk is worth about 25 out of the 50+ i paid for it new 32 months ago - i was disappointed to say the least

as low as the number was, i still agree with you- even if i trade it, the dealer needs to get 28+ for his effort to break even and i am just not seeing the demand for luxury convertibles right now to produce that sale

this is phila.pa talking so prices may fluctuate on the left coast, but you may have your own solution- look for someone who wants (or needs) to get out of their own car- toys always go first when dollars get short

the dealer or auction will only be a great disappointment if they need to dump it (or the payments) and they may think they need to hold it until mr repo shows up, but perhaps you are the answer for them and likewise them to you, sans the warranty

typically i dont recommend this approach and the financing needs to considered, but the people that buy this car are generally more aware and careful and take pride in their ride than the 4door neutral colored sedan driver would

best of luck

Any offer is looked at, if you feel like the car is worth 25K, give them an offer, cash is even better, best time to buy, dealers isn't selling b/c banks isn't giving out loans like they used to.

Jeff? Were you a DI? Lighten up Sarge...enjoy that retirement. :biglaugh: :tu:

Lots of great advice here alskor...you're in good hands (and welcome to SLKWorld!)

I would only add this...out of curiosity, I've tried to price my SLK and it comes out no different than a standard 230 even though I have a Designo series that was an $8-10K OEM option...go figure. :(

I generally have found that you basically eat any options you pay for on a new M-B. Very few add any value at all to a trade-in.

Hey Designo - here in the UK, the designo editions seem to be fetching 1-2k gbp more than the standard editions.

Seems like AMG body kit, designo, and COMAND are the only options where I can "see" a real difference in price.

EDITED : BiXenon's - how could I forget 'em? :p

Well then, I'll get to add "AMG Body Kit". :rb I'm picking it up in Mainz Monday, but will probably not install it until next year...we'll see.

:)I agree. When you go to the MB site and "build your own", options are expensive and add up quick. Plenty of nice, USED SLKs available with plenty of options selling at very reasonable prices. Choice options, HK Comand with NAV, Sirius radio, AirScarf, bi-xenons are a big plus when selling privately. I bought one used SLK missing some options I wanted. I didn't make that mistake the second time around.

Just picked up a new, leftover 2008 slk55 on May 1st with 83 miles on the odo for $49,900 from a dealer in SoCal and had it shipped to Houston. Car was pretty much loaded (airscarf, bixenon, ipod, sirius, premium 3 etc...). Sticker was ~$72,000.

Car was delivered yesterday, and first drive was to exhaust shop for cat delete, xpipe, muffler delete. :bannana::bannana:

Bad news, already got a rock chip within the first 20 miles driven :(

Just in case you haven't bought one yet...I bought mine in February 2009. A 2006 SLK280, 24K miles, dark red (burgundy), cream leather, automatic, nav, airscarf, power seats. I kept watching the price for about month and a half. The Honda dealer reduced the price from $28K to $24K. So I got it for slightly under $23K. Therefore, I'd say you should be able to get one for well under $23K since I'm not such a great negotiator. And keep in mind that there are some options that can be added later if the car you find doesn't have them. I really wanted Bluetooth and iPod integration and will hopefully add it, but MB & some of the aftermarket solutions are a bit expensive. Good luck with your search.
