As the thread title suggests, the rear view mirror in my 2004 SLK 350 has come unglued. The entire assembly is currently hanging by the wires which go to the sensors in the mirror mount.

I would normally just glue the mount back to the windscreen on any other car but there is a circle of what appears to be some type of clear gel left on the windscreen. Is this important to the way the sensors work? Can I just glue the mount back over the gel? If I unplug the sensors in order to remove the mirror to clean off the old glue will I then get ecu errors when I plug it back in?

I'm in work right now so can't post clarifying pictures but I will do so tomorrow.
