Rear Ended

801 Views 8 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  ladyavenue
I was stopped turning from a 4 lane onto a 2 lane side road 4 months ago at dusk and was rear ended by a Mazda 6 that never hit the brakes at 60 mph. My 09 SLK 300 really did well in the collision and while I wasn't hurt, she was totaled. I post this to let you know that she won the battle in the fight of her life that ended up breaking the RR axle. The RR tire was caca about 3 inches and due to more traffic, we decided to move the vehicles off the 4 lane road if we could and wait on the cops. The SLK was able to start and move into a parking lot at the 2 lane. I wasn't sure that she was totaled until the insurance company came back with the news. Just wanted to let everyone know how tough SLKs are!! If I get another Mercedes it will be an SL 500, so I'll see you all in the next life. 0:)

Glad you are ok! Hopefully another SLK is in your future!
... or an SLC 43.
Back in the mid `80's I witnessed a full speed head on collision between a full size Ford and and a W126 S class MB. The Ford as beyond recognition and the MB also had a similar level of significant front end damage.

I went to the passenger door of the MB first to see if the occupants were hurt, but I was concerned that the door may not open as the front fender was crushed back almost to the door, the front wheel on that side was also back to the door. The whole front of the car was jammed back against the doors. But, I grabbed the door handle, pulled and the door opened as if it was a new and undamaged car (the car was probably a year or two old at the time). It was incredible how well preserved the passenger compartment was. The occupants of the MB were very shaken up but not hurt. The occupants of the Ford had to be cut out and were both rushed to the hospital.

At the time I was just starting my family and I decided that night that our family car would be a MB. Within a year I had my first MB - a W126 S class 500SEL. It was a wonderful road car and I knew my young family was as safe as possible riding in it.
