Has anyone tried to replace the backplates on a R171? I need step by step advice on removal..

Had to go ahead on a trial and error basis. Removed rear caliper (hung out of way), removed rear brake shoes, removed rear hub nut, removed brake cable from rear plate, removed nuts and bolts from suspension arms, pulled hub and wheel carrier from half shaft, pressed out hub from wheel carrier, could then remove back plate. Pressed out wheel bearing as this must be renewed. Still to rebuild as waiting for parts. Has been a pain!

if its out like the merc sprinter it will rust onto the hub assy.
the stuff done sounds about rite , warm up back plate where it sits on the hub and bash off....Warning it will be scrap though by then.
guessing your taking off due to rust anyway ?

Spare backplates and bearings finally arrived. Set about pressing in the bearings into the wheel carrier. This was straight forward. Fitted the backplate. Again no problem. Pressed in the hub - no problem. Refitted wheel carrier and hub to the suspension. This was tricky. Refitted the brake shoes - eventually got them in place. Fitted disc and adjusted parking brake. Fitted the brake sensor. Did this whole procedure for both sides. Also fitted a new battery. Having serviced the car I reset the onboard computer. Ran a fault code scan and cleared all faults. Took car for test drive. Went into limp mode and indicated 2 malfunctions. ESP and BAS unavailable. Ran fault code scan and came up with a number of fault codes. As follows- ETC fault - P2400 Rear wheel RPM signal implausible. P2401 left rear RPM signal sent from traction system via the CAN bus implausible. ESM P1861 Left rear. P1860 Right rear. ME SFI -motor electronics 205A-4 Fault is stored in component transmission control P0720. Event 202A-1 CAN message from control module traction systems vehicle speed signal implausible P0500. ESP C1132 Right rear speed sensor signal fault. C1122 L 6/3 left rear speed sensor signal fault. I don't know if the speed sensors are faulty or not but will replace both sensors. Anybody got any knowledge of these fault readings and codes and any other advice?

I have not fitted rear bearings to a slk yet but some bearings can only be pressed in one way correctly due to having magnetic ring for abs pulse inside them.

The bearing may look the same on both side and will press in but if wrong way around will give you abs faults on both sides as soon as you drive off.

Need someone to confirm if slk has this type of bearing fitted ?

Thanks for reply. The bearings looked same both sides. the ones I removed did not seem to have any pulse ring. Think pulse ring is on half shaft. New sensors arrive today and will fit them. Hope that works.

Big warning in WIZ about looking after pulse ring.


Presumably because it is magnetic, so any exposure to external magnets will damage it.


Also shocks and physical damage.


Seems odd that both sides of your car have failed together though!
