If you go aftermarket make sure that you get the wiring loom that connects to the Audio Gateway. Your headunit is connected by the fiber optic Most network to an Audio Gateway in the passenger footwell that has a lot of the electronics and all of the speaker wire terminations. Several of the Chinese aftermarket units have that wiring loom available. FYI when you go aftermarket you will lose the MOPST network which will take out everything else on the loop like Sat Radio, CD Changer, Teleaid, etc. Not really a problem IMHO, as the new headunits have all of that and they are ten years newer.

Some Info on what you have: http://www.billsden.org/fileadmin/media/mercedes/slk/docs/train_audio_comm.pdf
