So I was at the Tucson MB shop a few weeks ago getting my car fixed, when I noticed this slick 2012 SLK55 AMG on the floor. I was drawn to it and it didn't take time before the Sales guy walked up to get me even more interested in it. My interests were to see the visual changes in the R172 55s vs the R171 models. Here are the pictures I took including side-by-side comparisons with mine...

Here are the obvious visual differences:

1- smoked rear brake lights (R171) - red in R172
2- chrome fins (R171) - tiny-weenie black fins (R172)
3- large front & rear brakes (R171 pre-facelift) - smaller brakes, even with upgraded performance package (R172):(
4- headlight assembly w/out LEDs (R171) - headlight assembly with 2 rows of LEDs (R172):tu:
5- Halogen fog lights (R171) - LEDs (R172):tu:
6- no side-badge ///AMG (R171) - V8 ///AMG badging (R172)
7- only front bumper airdam (R171) - front bumper and side air dams (R172):tu:
8- no option rear diffuser (R171) - option with P030 pkg (R172):tu:
9- leather-clad roll bars (R171) - chromed roll bars with glass inserts (R172):tu:
10- and a few more... gotta check it out more, I guess.

Interiors on the R172 are incredibly nice!!! Drove the car off the lot and had a blast. Of course the one I drove had the performance package hence handling was much improved (imo). The looks have certainly grown on me, and with those front LEDs and the overall gait of the car, me likey the R172 more and more... Who knows, maybe someday I'd look into upgrading into one...

:confused:The R172 SLK 55 had the performance package? Second picture shows it sits way too high. Overall looks good. Would prefer other wheels than the black multi spoke wheels.

Indeed the car was outfitted with the "performance pkg", which included LSD, the black-wheels, the diffuser, etc (as per sticker)... It does sit way too high, I agree with you. But the ride is sweeeetttt!!!! OK, I am no NASCAR driver or drag racer so can't comment on the intricate dynamics of this car, but for an everyday street car use, it is a fantastic machine.... fast, agile, nimble, and corners almost flat... if I had the $$$ I'd buy one, but with 2 kids in private colleges (and both aiming to go to Med School post-UG), gotta wait awhile...

And now for a contrarian opinion on the wheels. I love them!! :D My favorite for the car. I agree that the stance of the car is weird. Needs lowering springs, which is kind of surprising.

I knew you would, Durk. I took the wheel pic just for you :)

What's up with the R2D2 clock in the middle of the dash?

The rest of the interior looks good.

The stance of the car is perfect... if you're looking to 4x4 the car off-raod!

There's a whole lot of things I like about the R172. The only downside for me is that they moved away from the SLR/F1 nose look. I think that is my whole attraction to the R171. Maybe in a few years when the price is right for me.

I agree. IMO the vertical front gives the hood too much "over-hang" making it appear longer than it should to fit the rest of the profile. I was surprised to see the taller height also. I guess when I get too many miles on my 06 SLK I'll have to start looking for a used 2010. :)

In a recent magazine review of the 2012 SL, which also has the similar vertical front, the writer mentioned to the Mercedes media person that it looked like the front and rear were designed by two different design teams. Apparently the media person was not happy with the comment.

Yeah, that clock looks so weird sitting there, even worse in person.

Todd, when did you get rid of the other SLK, I just noticed it wasn't in your sig.

My thoughts in comparison to my 2010 55 AMG

- 172, interior is nicer in some ways but not night and then
- 172, those fins on the side "cheap plastic" and degrades the looks
- 172, hood, no thanks
- 172, stance, something is just wrong here

To me side by side I greatly prefer mine and not just because it's mine.

Ride of 172, it's okay but not night and day just different.

I just sold mine with only 4200 km on it, if I was looking it's what I would want.

I bought a new ML63 AMG, take delivery tomorrow.

P30 doesn't give you any new diffuser. You get it with or without P30. And don't be deceived.. It's not called a "Performance Package," but an "AMG Handling Package."

Here is a sticker straight off a 2012 SLK 55 AMG with P30 that I test drove in Denver. What makes you think it comes with an optional diffuser?

8- no option rear diffuser (R171) - option with P030 pkg (R172):tu:

The P30 package on this car included LSD which I understand was paired with the diffuser from the factory... The attached sticker is kinda hard to read but here is the full content of the P30 package on the car:

P30 AMG Handling Package - $4,750

  • AMG Compound Braking System
  • Top Speed 174mph
  • AMG Performance Suspension
  • Limited Slip Differential
  • AMG Leather/Alcantara Performance Steering Wheel
  • 18" AMG Multi-Spoke wheels
I notice that it didn't specifically mention the diffuser, but the Sales guy assured me he spec-ed out the car himself and it included the diffuser as part of the P30 (LSD) package.

I guess I am confused. Are you (or he) implying that non-P30 55's don't come with a diffuser??

Because this picture tells a different story...and it has no P30 (stock 5-spoke.)

We all have different tastes... I hated the 170, thought the 171 was OK... but fell in love with the 172.

I love the look... agree though the stance is too high. I have the performance package (UK) .... uprated suspension (aka lower by 10mm and stiffer), compound front discs (aka 2 piece) dynamica (aka alacantra) /leather steering wheel, LSD and to be honest, it handles awesome round the twistys in the peak district (Cat'n'Fiddle run, UK), but only in sport handling mode mind!

the look over all is awesome... just too high side on.
