Hello,
I drive a R172 200 year 2011, I have now often read that it is possible to swap the instrument cluster so that you get a colored display.
I have already read up a bit, the biggest problem I have, to find a suitable replacement. There are so many different instrument clusters.

Can anyone tell me what to look for to find a compatible instrument cluster?

I believe your MY2011 R172 has NTG4.5 v1/v2, but to get color cluster you'd need NTG4.7 and higher. Going to need a lot of elbow grease and MB pros/shops doing coding with SCN, Vediamo, and/or Xentry to get everything working right and compatible with your car VIN. Even then, there is no guarantee that all your car components will work with the upgraded COMAND hardware... Not going to be an easy task, for sure.

If you really want the features in the COMAND NTG 4.7 or 5.x, you may have to consider selling your MY2011 SLK and buying one from MY2014 and newer...

I have read on several forums that a 2011 has been upgraded. From 2013 the color display was introduced, before that it was already in the AMG 55, I have also talked to people there was a 2012 equipped with a color display.
If you have found the right station wagon, then it must be zeroed, after that it should not be a big hassle.
Critical is probably to take the history such as service entries, but I can do without a 2011.

Here was also written about it

But the exciting question remains, which station wagon do I have to get?

The colour display wasn’t appearing in U.K. cars until late 2014 and it didn’t appear on 55s any earlier either.

You'll need to get a new cluster or you will need a (rare) specialist who can reset the millage to 0.
If I recall correctly any 172 cluster will work and they are basicly 3 versions: standard, sport and AMG.
Sport would be 172-900-89-11

I believe @Wilhelm Sorban changed his Instrument Cluster to a coloured display. Wilhelm apologies if I have got that wrong.
