I drive a R172 200 year 2011, I have now often read that it is possible to swap the instrument cluster so that you get a colored display.
I have already read up a bit, the biggest problem I have, to find a suitable replacement. There are so many different instrument clusters.

Can anyone tell me what to look for to find a compatible instrument cluster?

I believe your MY2011 R172 has NTG4.5 v1/v2, but to get color cluster you'd need NTG4.7 and higher. Going to need a lot of elbow grease and MB pros/shops doing coding with SCN, Vediamo, and/or Xentry to get everything working right and compatible with your car VIN. Even then, there is no guarantee that all your car components will work with the upgraded COMAND hardware... Not going to be an easy task, for sure.

If you really want the features in the COMAND NTG 4.7 or 5.x, you may have to consider selling your MY2011 SLK and buying one from MY2014 and newer...
